The University of Jaffna has severely criticized the University Grants Commission for requesting University teachers to sign a document, to be sent to President Mahinda Rajapksa wishing him success at the January Presidential poll.

According to University sources, the University Grants Commission was interfering in their independence and democratic rights.

The University Grants Commission has sent a document to the Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University and down the line to the Deans, Professors, lecturers and other academics, to place their signatures on it wishing President Rajapaksa success.

The Jaffna Teachers Association has severely criticized the move and refused to sign the document.
The document had stated that the teachers were wishing the President success at the forthcoming polls to enhance the educational activities in the peninsula and for greater development in the region.

Meanwhile, the Jaffna Teachers Association was also up in arms a few weeks ago over excessive military presence in the vicinity of the University during the November LTTE martyrs' day observances.

Meanwhile, according to the officials of the Elections Department, in Jaffna, the Postal voting had taken place peacefully on 23 and 24 December
.
As President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to address an election rally in Jaffna on 2 January the security in the city has been intensified.

President Rajapaksa is also expected to inaugurate the extended railway service to Kankesanthurai from Jaffna.

பொது எதிரணியின் தேர்தல் விஞ்ஞாபனம் தொடர்பில் தமிழ் மக்கள் ஏமாற்றமடைந்துள்ளனர். அவர்களின் அன்றாடப் பிரச்சினைக்கான தீர்வு தொடர்பிலும் விஞ்ஞாபனத் தில் குறிப்பிடாதமை ஏமாற்ற மளிப்பதாகவே அமைந்துள்ளது.

இவ்வாறு தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்ட மைப்பின் நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினரும், பேச்சாளருமான க.சுரேஷ் பிரேமச்சந்திரன் 'உதயனுக்குத்' தெரிவித்தார்.

ஜனவரி மாதம் 8 ஆம் திகதி இடம் பெறவுள்ள ஜனாதிபதித் தேர்த லில் போட்டியிடும் பிரதான எதிரணி வேட்பாளர் மைத்திரிபால சிறி சேனவின் தேர்தல் விஞ்ஞாபனம் நேற்றுமுன்தினம் வெள்ளிக்கிழமை வெளியிடப்பட்டது. அதில், இனப் பிரச்சினைக்கான தீர்வுத் திட்டம் தொடர்பில் எதுவும் குறிப்பிடப் பட்டிருக்கவில்லை.

இந்த நிலையில், தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பின் நிலைப்பாடு என்ன என்பது தொடர்பில் அவரிடம் கேட்டபோதே அவர் மேற்கண்ட வாறு தெரிவித்தார்.

என்றார் அவர்.

ஜனாதிபதி வேட்பாளர்கள் இருவருமே தமிழ் மக்கள் நலன் தொடர்பில் எதுவித கருத்தையும் முன்வைக்காத நிலையில், வேட்பாளர்களின் தேர்தல் விஞ்ஞாபனம் வந்த பின் எமது முடிவை மக்களுக்கு தெரிவிப்போம் என தமிழரசுக் கட்சியின் தலைவரும் யாழ் மாவட்ட நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினருமான மாவை சேனாதிராஜா தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
ஜனாதிபதித் தேர்தலில் யாருக்கு ஆதரவு அளிப்பது என்பது குறித்து, தமிழரசுக் கட்சியின் இன்றைய கூட்டத்தில் எடுக்கப்பட்ட முடிவு அரசியல் குழுவின் ஊடாக கூட்டமைப்பிடம் முன்வைக்கப்படும்.  அதன் பின்னரே இறுதி முடிவு எடுக்கப்படும் என்றார்.

இலங்கை தமிழரசுக் கட்சியின் மத்தியகுழு கூட்டம் வவுனியா இரண்டாம் குறுக்குத் தெருவில் உள்ள விருந்தினர் விடுதியில் இன்று முற்பகல் 10 மணி முதல் மாலை 5.30 வரை இடம்பெற்றது.

அதன் பின்னர் ஊடகவியலாளர்களுக்கு கருத்துத் தெரிவிக்கும் போதே இவ்வாறு தெரிவித்தார். அவர் மேலும் தெரிவிக்கையில்,

தமிழரசுக்கட்சியின் செயற்குழு நிகழச்சி நிரலின் அடிப்படையில் இன்றைய அரசியல் நிலை, ஜனாதிபதி தேர்தல் தொடர்பாகவும் ஏனைய விடங்கள் குறித்தும் கல்துரையாடியிருந்தோம்.

இந்தக் கூட்டம் கருத்து ஆராயும் கூட்டமாக இடம்பெற்றிருந்தது. பல மாவட்டங்களிலும் இருந்து வந்த எமது உறுப்பினர்களின் தமது கருத்துக்களை தெரிவித்தனர். இதன் போது அவர்களது கருத்துக்கள் ஒருமித்தனவாக இருந்தன.

இன்று இந்த கருத்துக்களை உள்வாங்கி, தமிழரசுக்கட்சியின் அரசியல் குழு ஊடாக ஆராய்ந்து பொருத்தமான முடிவை எடுக்கவுள்ளோம்.

அவ்வாறு எடுக்கப்படும் முடிவு, தமிழ் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பின் தலைமைக்கு கொடுக்கப்படும். அதன் பின் தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்புதான் உரிய நேரத்தில் ஆராய்ந்து தீர்மானத்தை எடுக்கும் எடுக்கும் என்றார்.

ஜனாதிபதி வேட்பாளர்களுடன் ஒப்பந்தங்களை செய்துள்ளீர்களா என ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் கேள்வி எழுப்பினர்.

இதற்குப் பதிலளித்த மாவை எம்.பி, நாம் அவ்வாறான ஒப்பந்தங்கள் எதனையும் செய்யவில்லை என்பதனை திட்டவட்டமாக சொல்லுகின்றேன் என்றார்.

தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பில் அங்கம் வகிக்கின்றவர்கள் மறைமுகமாக மைத்திரிபாலவுக்கு ஆதரவான கருத்துக்களை கூறுவது தொடர்பாக உங்கள் கருத்து என்ன என கேட்டபோது,  அவ்வாறு யாரும் பகிரங்கமாக மைத்திரிபால சிறிசேனவை ஆதரிக்க வேண்டும் என்று சொன்னதாக இல்லை.

ஆனால் பொதுமக்கள் அனைவரும் வாக்களிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற கருத்தைத்தான் அவர்கள் வெளிப்படுத்தினர் என்று அறிகின்றோம். இன்றைய கூட்டத்திலும் எல்லோரும் வாக்களிப்பதற்கு வற்புறுத்த வேண்டும் என்ற கருத்தைத்தான் வலியுறுத்தினர் என்றார்.

ஜனாதிபதி வேட்பாளர்கள் இருவருமே தமிழ் மக்கள் நலன் தொடர்பில் எதுவித கருத்தையும் முன்வைக்காத நிலையில் தமிழ் மக்கள் கட்டாயம் வாக்களிக்க வேண்டும் என ஏன் கோருகிறீர்கள் எனக் கேட்டபோது, அது மக்களின் ஜனநாயக உரிமை. அதனைப் பயன்படுத்துமாறு கோருகின்றோம். வேட்பாளர்களின் தேர்தல் விஞ்ஞாபனம் வந்த பின் எமது முடிவை மக்களுக்கு தெரிவிப்போம் என்றார்.

கூட்டமைப்பின் நாடாளுமன்ற குழு தலைவர் இரா.சம்பந்தனின் இந்திய விஜயம் ஜனாதிபதி தேர்தல் தொடர்பானதா எனக் கேட்ட போது, அவர் ஏற்கனவே செய்து கொண்ட சத்திரசிகிச்சைக்காக வருடாந்தம் சிகிச்சை பெற்று வந்தார்.

அந்த சிகிச்சைக்காகவே அவர் இந்தியா சென்றுள்ளார். மாறாக ஜனாதிபதி தேர்தல் தொடர்பாக டில்லி சென்று பேச வேண்டிய தேவை தற்போதைக்கு ஏற்படவில்லை என்றார் மாவை எம்.பி.

சிறிலங்கா அதிபர் தேர்தலில், எதிரணியின் பொது வேட்பாளர் மைத்திரிபால சிறிசேனவுக்கு ஆதரவு அளிக்க தீர்மானித்துள்ளதாக ஈழமக்கள் புரட்சிகர விடுதலை முன்னணி (பத்மநாபா) அறிவித்துள்ளது.

இதுதொடர்பாக அந்த அமைப்பின் பொதுச்செயலர் தி.ஸ்ரீதரன் வெளியிட்டுள்ள செய்திக்குறிப்பில்,

“எதிர்வரும் அதிபர் தேர்தலில் மக்கள் தங்கள் வாக்களிக்கும் உரிமையை முழுமையாக பிரயோகிக்க வேண்டும் என்று எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம்.

கடந்த, 1995இல் இந்த நாட்டில் சமஷ்டி முறையிலான தீர்வை பற்றி சிங்கள மக்கள் மத்தியில் பேச முடிந்தது.

இன்று துரதிஸ்டவசமாக இனப்பிரச்சினை நாட்டின் பிரதான கட்சிகளின் நிகழ்ச்சி நிரலில் இல்லாமல் போய்விட்டது.

நிறைவேற்று அதிகாரமுள்ள அதிபர் முறையை நீக்குதல், சகல இன, மத சமூகங்களும் சமத்துவமாக வாழ்வதற்கான ஏதுநிலைகள் உருவாகுதல், இந்திய – இலங்கை ஒப்பந்தத்தின் அடிப்படையில் உருவான மாகாணசபைகளுக்கு 13 ஆவது திருத்தச் சட்டத்தின் கீழான அதிகாரங்கள் பகிர்ந்தளிக்கப்படுவது முழுமைப்படுத்தலுடன், அரசியல் அமைப்பின் 19 வது திருத்தச் சட்டம் நீக்கப்பட்டு,  17 வது திருத்தச் சட்டத்தை மீளக்கொண்டு வருதல் மூலம் சுதந்திரமான காவல்துறை சேவை, நீதிச் சேவை மற்றும் தேர்தல் ஆணைக்குழுக்கள் உருவாக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என நாம் உணர்கின்றோம்.

ஊழலற்ற, பாரபட்சமில்லாத, மக்களுக்கு நெருக்கமான நிர்வாகம் நாட்டின் எல்லா மாவட்டங்களிலும் நிலவுவதற்கு நடவடிக்கை மேற்கொள்ளப்பட வேண்டும்.

மேற்படி எதிர்பார்ப்புக்களுடன் எதிர்வரும் அதிபர் தேர்தலில் பொது அணியின் வேட்பாளர் மைத்திரிபால சிறிசேனவை ஆதரிக்கவுள்ளோம்” என குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

கடந்த ஆண்டு, நடந்த வடக்கு மாகாணசபைத் தேர்தலில் ஈபிஆர்எல்எவ் பத்மநாபா அணி, ஐக்கிய மக்கள் சுதந்திர முன்னணியின் வெற்றிலைச் சின்னத்தில் போட்டியிட்டிருந்தது.

ஆனந்தசங்கரி தலைமையிலான தமிழர் விடுதலைக் கூட்டணியும் ஏற்கனவே மைத்திரிபால சிறிசேனவை ஆதரிப்பதாக அறிவித்துள்ளது.

The JVP’s program of raising the awareness of the Public targeting the oncoming presidential election was launched on Monday (01) from Nugegoda.

Delivering the key note speech at the occasion, the leader of the JVP Mr. Anurak Kumara Dissanayake explained, with examples, why Mr. Maithripala Sirisena must be elected.

Accordingly he pointed out that since there are only two “camps”, the only way to defeat one camp is by joining with the other. To explain this he took two “shops” as an example.

நடைபெற வுள்ள ஜனாதிபதித் தேர்தலில்  மஹிந்த ராஜபக்ஷ வெற்றிக்காக அமைச்சர் விமல் வீரவன்ச தலைமையிலான தேசிய சுதந்திர முன்னணி முழுமையான ஆதரவையும் ஒத்துழைப்பினையும் வழங்கவுள்ளது.

அமைச்சர் விமல் வீரவன்ச தலைமையிலான தேசிய சுதந்திர முன்னணியின் குழுவொன்று நேற்றைய தினம் அலரி மாளிகையில்  மஹிந்த ராஜபக்ஷவைச் சந்தித்துக் கலந்துரையாடியுள்ளாது இதன்போதே இந்த உறுதிமொழியை அக்கட்சியினர் வழங்கியுள்ளனர்.

මෙකී තැපැල් ඡන්ද අයදුම්පත් ප්‍රතික්‍ෂේප වීම පිළිබඳව මෙම රාජ්‍ය සේවකයින් කල් ඇතුව දැනුවත් කිරීමට ද පියවරක් ගෙන නොතිබිණ.

කෝට්ටේ මහ නගර සභාවේ තැපැල් ඡන්ද ප්‍රකාශ කිරීම සඳහා සකසා තිබු ස්ථානයේ CCTV කැමරා යොදා ඇති බවට පැමිණිල්ලක් ලැබිණ.මෙම කැමරා මඟින් ඡන්දය ප්‍රකාශ කිරීමේ රහස්‍ය භාවයට හානි කර තිබිණ.

இந்த ஆட்சிக் கொடுமையில் இருந்து கொஞ்சமாவது மீண்டு தலை தூக்க வேண்டும். இன்றைய இறுக்கமான சூழலில் இருந்து கொஞ்சமாவது மீள வேண்டும்.

துன்பப்படும் தமிழ் பேசும் மக்களின் கோணத்தில் இருந்து பார்த்தால் தான் இந்த உண்மைகள் புரியும். இதற்கு இன்று எம்முன் இருக்கும் ஒரே வழி அன்னப்பறவை சின்னத்துக்கு வாக்களித்து இன்றைய ஆளும் கூட்டணியை தோற்கடிப்பதுதான்.

அதனாலேயே பல்வேறு விட்டுக் கொடுப்புகளுடன் இந்த கூட்டணியில் இன்று நாம் இருக்கின்றோம். எங்கள் அரசியல் சமூக வாழ்வில் ஆரம்பித்து, எம் சமூக பொருளாதார வாழ்விலும் கை வைக்க இவர்கள் ஆரம்பித்து விட்டார்கள்.
எமது நேர்மையான நியாயமான அரசியல் அபிலாஷகளை பிடுங்கினார்கள். நாம் என்ன தொழில் செய்ய வேண்டும், எப்படி செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று கட்டளையிட்டு எம் பொருளாதாரத்தில் கை வைத்தார்கள். இப்படியே போனால் நாம், நாளை நாம் வழிபடுவதற்கும் தொழுவதற்கும் பிரார்த்திப்பதற்கும் இவர்களிடம் அனுமதி வாங்க வேண்டி வரும்.
எனவே தமிழ் பேசும் மக்கள் மத்தியில் இன்று வாதப்பிரதிவாதங்கள் தேவையில்லை. தயக்கங்களுக்கு அவசியம் இல்லை.

எமது வாக்கு முக்கியமானது. அதை பாதுகாப்பாக உரிய இடத்துக்கு கொண்டு சென்று சேர்ப்பது அதைவிட முக்கியமானது. இந்த காட்டாட்சியை விரட்ட அதை பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும். எனவேதான் ஜனவரி எட்டாம் திகதி காலை ஏழு மணிக்கும், பத்து மணிக்கும் இடையில் தமது வாக்கை அளிக்க வேண்டும் என தமிழ், முஸ்லிம் மக்களை நான் கோருகிறேன்.

சிறீலங்காவில் நடைபெறவுள்ள ஜனாதிபதித் தேர்தலை முன்னிட்டு பொது எதிரணிகளினால் கைக்சாத்திடப்பட்ட உடன்படிக்கையில் தமிழர்களின் பிரச்சினைக்கு தீர்வு காணும்வகையில் எந்தவொரு விடயங்களும் அதில் உள்ளடக்கப்படவில்லை என ஜனநாயக மக்கள் முன்னணியில் தலைவர் மனோ கணேசன் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

விகாரமாதேவி பூங்கா திறந்த வெளி அரங்கில் பொது எதிரணிகள் ஏற்படுத்திக்கொண்ட இந்த உடன்படிக்கை நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்டு உரையாற்றும் போதே அவர் இதனைக்கூறியுள்ளார். இது குறித்து அவர் மேலும் தெரிவிக்கையில்:

Launch of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s election manifesto “Mahinda Chinthana thun  kal dekma” has been postponed due to undisclosed reasons.

The launch was scheduled to take place tomorrow (22) under the auspices of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

According to highly placed sources of the government, the launch will now take place on December 25, barely 12 days before the date of the presidential election.

When asked about the delay, a senior spokesperson of the government said it was due to a “printing issue”. However, he said he did not wish to elaborate on details.

The election manifesto of President Rajapaksa is to be launched under the theme “a secure country and a brighter future”.

Meanwhile, certain sections of the opposition claimed that the government was buying time to launch its election manifesto because it had decided to add some last minute inclusions to counter the proposals of Common Candidate

Maithripala Sirisena’s election manifesto.

The Up Country People’s Front (UCPF) has pledged their fullest support to the President at the forthcoming Presidential Election.

Leader of the Up Country People’s Front Shanthidevi Chandrasekaran announced their decision during a meeting held yesterday.

Leader of UCPF Shanthidevi Chandrasekaran and party members of also met President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees on 10 December.

However, UCPF senior member and former Deputy Minister V. Radhakrishnan left the party on 11 December and expressed his unconditional support to Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena at the forthcoming Presidential election. One

Provincial Councilor  attached the Central Provincial Council and 22 Pradeshiya Sabha members also joined the Common Candidate with Radhakrishnan.

Will there be changes in economic policies in 2015?

With less than three weeks for the presidential election, a question uppermost in the minds of the intelligentsia and business community must be: “Will 2015 be a turning point in economic policies?” There is no definite answer as the election campaign has paid scant attention to economic issues.

In as far as the incumbent President is concerned the campaign is based on the continuation of his development strategy. The opposition is focused on the abolition of the executive presidency and change of the constitution that would have significant consequences for economic policies. Whoever is elected, the economic challenges would be the same, but policies are likely to be different.

Economic policy changes

Most past changes in government brought about significant shifts in economic policies. Some have been drastic, others were policy continuity with change. Changes in policy, as well as the prospect of drastic changes in policies, created a climate of economic uncertainty that was a significant reason for the economy’s lower than potential economic performance. This environment of policy uncertainty and frequent changes in economic policies were not conducive to economic development.

Ideological persuasions, impractical policies, poor economic management, external shocks, ethnic violence, insurgencies, terrorism and the civil war were also significant reasons for lower economic performance.

First change in policies

The post-independent UNP governments followed liberal economic policies till 1956 with an emphasis on agricultural development and social welfare. The first change of government in 1956 was a political and economic turning point as it introduced several socialist policies that transformed the economy into a mixed economy.

Economic enterprises such as bus transport, the Bank of Ceylon, port services, petroleum import and distribution, among others, were nationalised. State industries were established and the Peoples’ Bank was set up. A comprehensive agrarian reform programme that included the Paddy Lands Act of 1958 was implemented.

Partial return to liberalism

The re-election of the UNP in 1965 resulted in a partially liberal regime from 1965 to 1970 that emphasised development of food crop agriculture. It restored foreign aid from Western countries that had been suspended owing to the nationalisation of petroleum distribution.

Towards socialism

The election of the coalition government led by the SLFP in 1970 pursued socialist policies from 1970-77. It expanded state ownership and control of the economy. The estates were taken over by the state and mismanaged. There was a ceiling on land ownership and houses. It discouraged foreign investment.

The government adopted an inward looking import substitution economic strategy with severe import and exchange controls as a means of facing the severe foreign exchange crisis. It was a period of severe economic difficulties owing to prolonged external shocks and economic disruption due to the youth insurgency in April 1971.

The external and internal shocks, inward looking import substitution strategy, state ownership and control of economic enterprises resulted in an era of poor economic performance and severe hardships.

Economic liberalisation

The liberalisation of the economy by the UNP government from 1977 to 1994 was a break from the past. The outward looking economic policies, liberal trade and exchange control policies, larger foreign assistance and export led strategies diversified the economy and achieved higher economic growth.

Ethnic violence in July 1983 however arrested the growth momentum. It was a setback to attracting foreign investment and developing tourism. The civil war that began subsequently and lasted for over a quarter century was a huge setback to the country’s economic development.

Continuity and change

The political change in 1994 did not result in a departure from liberal economic policies. The decade from 1994 to 2004 was one of continued liberal economic policies. Some of the nationalised ventures were privatised and liberal trade policies continued. The management of estates was handed over to private companies, telecommunications. Sri Lankan Airlines, the Gas Company and several other state enterprises were privatised,

The government described its policies as “Open economic policies with a human face”. It was a period of continuity and change in economic policy. However the economy operated under severe stress of the civil war in the North and East of the country and severe financial difficulties. An energy crisis disrupted industrial production and economic growth was arrested.

Last decade

The economic policy framework from 2004 to 2014 attempted to increase state control of the economy and adopted some inward looking economic policies. The development strategy has focussed heavily on economic and physical infrastructure development, especially since 2005 when the war ended. The foreign funded infrastructure led development strategy has achieved high rates of economic growth.

The last decade has seen changes that are once again a departure from previous economic policies. There has once again been a tilt towards more state control of the economy and inward looking policies. These years saw the intensification of the civil war, its end and a return to peaceful conditions in May 2009. Consequently the economy has grown by around 7 percent during this decade, though the country’s indebtedness remains high.

Summary

These economic changes together with external shocks and internal strife have resulted in a much lesser economic performance than the country’s potential. Adverse terms of trade and fluctuations in global demand have affected exports adversely. Internal disruptions to the economy consisting of ethnic conflicts, insurgencies, terrorism and a protracted civil war have setback economic development.

There has been a resurgence of the economy since the end of the war in 2009, but greater state control of the economy and misdirected priorities in public spending policies constrains the country from achieving its economic potential.

Future

Whoever assumes leadership after the polls, the fundamental economic problems are formidable. Foreign indebtedness, large public debt, burdensome debt servicing costs, large trade deficits, inadequate expenditure on social infrastructure, education, research and care of the elderly are challenges.

Whoever leads the government after the elections, it would be a good opportunity to reassess economic policies and adjust and change them to achieve sustainable economic development. Will the post 2015 regime learn from the past and develop pragmatic economic policies for economic development?

ஐக்கிய மக்கள் சுதந்திரக் கூட்டமைப்பில் அங்கம் வகித்த அமைச்சர் ரிசாத் பதியுதீன் தலைமையிலான அகில இலங்கை மக்கள் காங்கிரஸ் அரசிலிருந்து விலகியுள்ளது.

ஜனாதிபதி தேர்தலில் எதிரணிகளின் பொது வேட்பாளரான மைத்திரிபால சிறிசேனவிற்கு ஆதரவு வழங்க அந்தக் கட்சி தீர்மானித்துள்ளது.

அமைச்சர் ரிசாத் பதியுதீன், அக்கட்சியின் சார்பில் அண்மையில் நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினராக பதவியேற்ற அமீர் அலி சகிதம் எதிர்க்கட்சித் தலைவரின் அலுவலகத்தில் இன்று நடைபெற்ற ஊடகவியலாளர் சந்திப்பில் கலந்துகொண்டார்.

இந்தச் சந்திப்பில் எதிரணிகளின் பொது வேட்பாளர் மைத்திரிபால சிறிசேன , எதிர்க்கட்சித் தலைவர் ரணில் விக்ரமசிங்க மற்றும் முன்னாள் ஜனாதிபதி சந்திரிகா குமாரதுங்க ஆகியோரும் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

தமது கட்சியை சேர்ந்த 7 மாகாணசபை உறுப்பினர்களும் 69 உள்ளூராட்சி சபை உறுப்பினர்களும் தமது புதிய அரசியல் பயணத்தில் இணைந்து கொண்டுள்ளதாக ரிசாத் பதியுதீன்  தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

அகில இலங்கை மக்கள் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சியைச் சேர்ந்த மற்றுமொரு நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினரான துணையமைச்சர் எம். எல்.ஏ. எம். ஹிஸ்புல்லா ஏற்கனவே ஜனாதிபதி மகிந்த ராஜபக்சவிற்கு தனது ஆதரவை வழங்கி வருகின்றார்.

அரச தரப்பினருக்கும் அகில இலங்கை மக்கள் காங்கிரஸுக்குமிடையில் இடம்பெற்ற பேச்சுவார்த்தையின் பலனாகவே, இம்மாத முற்பகுதியில் அரச கூட்டணியின் தேசியப் பட்டியல் நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினரான எச்.எம். அஸ்வர் தனது பதவியை இராஜினமா செய்திருந்தார். அந்த வெற்றிடத்திற்கு எஸ். எச். அமீர் அலி நியமனம் பெற்றிருந்தமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

ஐரோப்பிய ஒன்றியம் மற்றும் ஏனைய தரப்பினர் கோரிவருவதைப் போன்று வடக்கிலுள்ள இராணுவம் மீள அழைக்கப்பட மாட்டாது.

மேலும் படையினரின் எண்ணிக்கை 50 வீதத்தினால் குறைக்குமாறும் சில தரப்பினர் கோரி வருகின்றனர். எனவே அவ்வாறான செயற்பாடுகளுக்கும் இடமளிக்கப்பட மாட்டாது.

நாட்டை பிளவுபடுத்தும் நோக்கிலேயே இவ்வாறான செயற்பாடுகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வருகின்றது 

என்றும் அவர் மேலும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

Ban Ki-moon UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon still wants Sri Lanka to cooperate with the ongoing human rights investigation on Sri Lanka mandated by the UN Human Rights Council despite President Mahinda Rajapaksa saying he will not back the investigation.

The President has said he will let local laws to deal with any human rights violators and not agree to a UN probe.

Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that the Secretary‑General has always encouraged the Government of Sri Lanka to comprehensively address the post-war agenda and the Secretary‑General has also echoed the calls made by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, for the Government to cooperate with the ongoing human rights investigation.

The report on Sri Lanka by the investigations team of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) will be taken up for discussion at the UN Human Rights Council on March 25.

The 28th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council will be held from March 2 to March 27 in Geneva and the report on Sri Lanka is part of the agenda.

In its resolution A/HRC/25/1 adopted in March 2014 on “Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka”, the United Nations Human Rights Council requested the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to “undertake a comprehensive investigation into alleged serious violations and abuses of human rights and related crimes by both parties in Sri Lanka during the period covered by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC),

and to establish the facts and circumstances of such alleged violations and of the crimes perpetrated with a view to avoiding impunity and ensuring accountability, with assistance from relevant experts and special procedures mandate holders”.

The Council requested the High Commissioner to present an oral update at its twenty-seventh session and a comprehensive report on the investigations at its twenty-eighth session. (Colombo Gazette)

 An influential Tamil diaspora group based in the UK has asked the Tamil people in Sri Lanka to use every vote carefully in the January 8 Presidential election.

In a statement published in the local media today, the Global Tamil Forum (GTF) has stressed on the need for the Tamils to exercise their vote.

"GTF is fully aware that in the post-independent Sri Lanka, Tamil people have continuously lost their rights under a flawed majoritarian electoral system.

"Their desire to have a degree of control in the Tamil majority areas was never granted, despite repeated democratic expressions of their wishes through all available electoral means," it said in the statement.

"Nevertheless, from our perspective, whether Sri Lanka should continue in the same path or whether change should be taken at this juncture to stop and reverse this trajectory is the fundamental question facing the electorate," the GTF said.

In a similar statement, the Tamil Civil Society Forum yesterday asked Tamils to vote according to their conscience.

"If taking a just position on the Tamils question during an election will lead to a candidate losing Sinhala Buddhist votes we wonder how that candidate will be able to mobilize the Sinhala people towards accepting a fair deal for the Tamils once he or she is in power," it said.

 மஹிந்தவின் பிரச்சாரத்திற்கென ஆலய மண்டபத்தை அடாவடியாக பயன்படுத்திய சுதந்திரக்கட்சி முக்கியஸ்தர் சர்வாவின் முகத்தில் அறைந்துள்ளனர் அப்பகுதி இளைஞர்கள்.

தென்மராட்சியின் சாவகச்சேரி, கச்சாய் அம்மன் கோயில் மண்டபத்தில் அமைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த சிறிலங்கா சுதந்திரக் கட்சி அலுவலகமே அப்பகுதி இளைஞர்களினால் நேற்று திங்கட்கிழமை இரவோடிரவாக அடித்து நொறுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இது தொடர்பில் கொடிகாமம் காவல் நிலையத்தில் முறைப்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது.

மஹிந்தவின் பிறந்த தினத்தின்போது சுதந்திரக்கட்சியினர் ஆலயத்தில் பொங்கல் பூசை வழிபாடுகளில் ஈடுபட்டனர் என்றும், இதனைத் தொடர்ந்து ஆலய மண்டபம் ஒன்றில் பொருட்களை வைத்த அவர்கள் சில தினங்களில் அதை கட்சி அலுவலகமாகவும் மாற்றிக்கொண்டனர் என்றும் தெரிவிக்கப்படுகின்றது.

இந்த நிலையில் நேற்றிரவு குறித்த அலுவலகம் இனந்தெரியாதவர்களால் அடித்து நொறுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதுகுறித்து ஆலய நிர்வாகத்தினர் கொடிகாமம் காவல்துறையினருக்கு அறிவித்துள்ளனர்.

இலங்கையின் மிகப்பெரிய நீர்தேக்கங்களில் ஒன்றாகவும் கிளிநொச்சி மாவட்ட விவாசாய பெருமக்களின் நீர்க்கொடை தாயாகவும் கடந்த வருடங்களில் முக்கிய கலந்துரையாடல் மையப்பொருளாகவும் விளங்கிய இரணைமடு பெருங்குளம் இன்றைய நிலவரத்தின்படி 31 அடிவரை நீர் உயர்ந்துள்ளது.

இந்தநிலையில் நாளை காலை குளத்தின் வான்கதவுகள் திறக்கப்படும் என கிளிநொச்சி நீர்ப்பாசன திணைக்கள வட்டாரங்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

வரலாற்றில் இல்லாத அளவு கொடும் வரட்சியை மக்கள் சந்தித்து மழைக்காக ஏங்கியிருந்தபோது பருவமழை பெய்து இரணைமடுக்குளம் நீண்ட காலத்துக்குபின் இப்பொழுது தற்போது வான்கதவுகள் திறக்கும் நிலையை எட்டியுள்ளது.

நாளை வான்கதவுகள் திறக்கப்பட இருக்கும் நிலையில் இன்று பா.உறுப்பினர் சி.சிறீதரன் அங்கு நேரடியாக சென்று குளத்தின் நீர்பேணல் நிலைமைகள் அணைகளின் நிலைமைகளை அங்கு இரவுபகல் பணியில் இருந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் கிளிநொச்சி நீர்ப்பாசன திணைக்களத்தின் பொறியியலாளர் உள்ளிட்ட அதிகாரிகளிடம் கேட்டுத் தெரிந்து கொண்டார்.

நூற்றாண்டு பெருமைவாய்ந்த அணைகளை கொண்டுள்ள இரணைமடுக் குளத்தில் அணைகளில் சில பகுதிகளில் நீர் கசிவுகள் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள நிலையில் அதை பொறியியலாளர்கள் சீர்செய்து அவதானித்து வருகின்றார்கள்.

அணையின் நிலைமைகள் மற்றும் வான்பாயும் பகுதிகளில் காணப்படும் பல்லாயிரம் ஏக்கர் நெற்பயிர்களைகளை கருத்திற்கொண்டு இரணைமடுவின் நீர்மட்டம் கடந்த காலங்களில் ஒரு சீராக பேணுப்பட்டு வருவது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
