US SENATORS INTRODUCE RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF SRI LANKA’S DOMESTIC RECONCILIATION PROCESS

Calls on President Obama to adopt balanced & comprehensive policy towards Sri Lanka

Eleven senior Members of the United States Senate introduced a bipartisan Senate Resolution (S. Res. 364) on Thursday, Feb 27 expressing support for Sri Lanka’s internal reconciliation process and the significant overall progress the Country has made since the end of the civil war–some 5 years ago.

The Senators also called on the President of the United States to develop a “comprehensive and well balanced policy towards Sri Lanka”, supportive of promoting U.S. interests including respect for human rights, democracy the rule of law as well as taking onto account the United States economic and security interests.

Senate Resolution 364 recognizes the immense suffering of the Sri Lankan people caused by the 26-year conflict, and the genuine aspiration of the government to prevent any outside force from triggering a reemergence of similar situations that are now behind us; but instead look to the future through enhanced national unity and reconciliation . A special recognition has been given to the establishment of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and the significance of implementing its recommendations.

Sri Lanka President H.E. Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed the LLRC in May 2010, following the end of the three decade long terrorist conflict. The Commission Report was released in November 2011 and tabled in the Parliament in December 2011. The Cabinet of Ministers approved the National Plan of Action to implement the recommendations of the LLRC in July 2012.

Senate Resolution 364 underscores that the Government of Sri Lanka has made significant progress in implementing the LLRC recommendations within a limited time. With a special reference to the first ever elections held in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka in September 2013, the Resolution commends the reestablishment of representative democracy in the conflict-ridden areas through elections.

“ …the elections allowed the people of the North of Sri Lanka to exercise their political rights that had been withheld from them for more than 20 years by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and resulted in a clear victory for the provincial wing of the Tamil National Alliance”

The Resolution however remains concerned over possible restrictions to the media freedom and religious freedom of Sri Lanka. It highlights that a peaceful and just society reconciled through a political settlement addressing the needs of all ethnic group should be achieved by a process driven by the people of Sri Lanka themselves.

The Resolution calls on the United States Government and the International community to offer meaningful assistance to theGovernment of Sri Lanka to make its domestic endeavors toward reconciliation more effective, while respecting the country’s sovereignty, stability and security.

The Resolution encourages Sri Lanka to consider a mechanism similar to the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission to heal the wounds of war. The Government of Sri Lanka is further urged to take necessary steps to improve religious and media freedom in the country.

Expressing support for the internal rebuilding, resettlement, and reconciliation within Sri Lanka that are necessary to ensure a lasting peace.

IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES
February 27, 2014

Mr. INHOFE submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations

RESOLUTION

Expressing support for the internal rebuilding, resettlement, and reconciliation within Sri Lanka that are necessary to ensure a lasting peace.

Whereas May 19, 2014, marks the five-year anniversary of the end of the 26 year civil war between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Government ofSri Lanka;

Whereas the people of Sri Lanka suffered greatly as a result of this conflict, the impact and aftermath of which has been felt by all, especially by women, children, and families;

Whereas the Government of Sri Lanka established a ‘‘Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission’’ (LLRC) to report whether any person, group, or institution directly or indirectly bears responsibility for incidents that occurred between February 2002 and May 2009 and to recommend measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future and promote further national unity and reconciliation among all communities;

Whereas the LLRC report was presented to the Sri Lankan Parliament on December 16, 2011, and officially translated into Sinhala and Tamil on August 16, 2012;

Whereas the LLRC report acknowledges important events and grievances that have contributed to decades of political violence and war in Sri Lanka and makes constructive recommendations on a wide range of issues, including the need to credibly investigate widespread allegations of extrajudicial killings; enforced disappearances; intentional targeting of civilians and noncombatants; demilitarizing the north and the country as a whole; reaching a political settlement with minority communities on the meaningful decentralization of power; and promoting and protecting the right to freedom of expression for all through the enactment of a right to information law and additional rule of law reforms;

Whereas the Government of Sri Lanka developed the National Plan of Action to implement the recommendations of the LLRC and has made significant progress within limited time in the implementation of the National Plan of Action, notably in the areas of demining, rehabilitation of ex-combatants, resettlement of displaced persons, improvements of infrastructure and social services in the North and East, as well as investigations into complaints regarding persons who have disappeared during the war;

Whereas there have been reports of attacks on places of worship and restrictions on the media in several places in Sri Lanka;

Whereas the Government of Sri Lanka expressed its commitment to address the needs of all ethnic groups and has recognized the necessity of a political settlement and reconciliation for a peaceful and just society, which is a long-term process that will need to be driven by the people of Sri Lanka themselves;

Whereas the September 21, 2013, elections in Sri Lanka for the Northern, Central, and North Western Provincial Councils were an important step in fulfilling this commitment;

Whereas these elections were made possible through a sustained effort by the Government of Sri Lanka to restore infrastructure in the North and put in place a system for the conduct of the elections;

Whereas the elections allowed the people of the North of Sri Lanka to exercise their political rights that had been withheld from them for more than 20 years by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and resulted in a clear victory for the provincial wing of the Tamil National Alliance;

Whereas Sri Lanka is enjoying rapid economic growth as an important hub for shipping transport, technology, and tourism in the South Asia region;

Whereas Sri Lanka is of great strategic importance to the United States, due to its location, deep- water ports, and proximity to the world’s busiest shipping lanes, an importance noticed and pursued by other significant powers; and

Whereas Sri Lanka seeks to be a key United States partner in the fight against terrorism and Indian Ocean piracy:

Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Senate —

(1) calls upon the President to develop a comprehensive and well balanced policy towards Sri Lanka that reflects United States interests, including respect for human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, as well as economic and security interests;

(2) calls on the United States Government and the international community to assist the Government of Sri Lanka, with due regard to its sovereignty, stability, and security, in establishing domestic mechanisms to deal with any grievances arising from actions committed by both sides during and after the civil war in Sri Lanka;

(3) encourages the Government of Sri Lanka to put in place a truth and reconciliation commission similar to the one adopted by South Africa to help heal the wounds of war, taking into account the unique characteristics of the conflict and its aftermath; and

(4) urges the Government of Sri Lanka to improve religious and media freedoms and to bring to justice those responsible for attacks on journalists and newspaper offices as well as places of worship, regardless of religion.

Around the world, angry workers unite on May Day

ISTANBUL — Workers around the world united in anger during May Day rallies Wednesday — from fury in Europe over years of austerity measures that have cut wages, reduced benefits and eliminated many jobs altogether, to rage in Asia over relentlessly low pay, the rising cost of living and hideous working conditions that have left hundreds dead in recent months alone.

In protests, parades, strikes and other demonstrations held in cities across the planet, activists lashed out at political and business leaders they allege have ignored workers' voices or enriched themselves at the expense of laborers during what has been a difficult few years for the global economy. In some places, the demonstrations turned violent, with activists clashing with police.

The pain was especially fresh in Bangladesh, where the collapse last week of an illegally built eight-story facility housing multiple garment factories killed more than 400 in a Dhaka suburb. The building collapse followed a garment factory fire in November that killed 112 people in the country, and it has increased the pressure on the global garment industry to improve working conditions.

A loud procession of thousands of workers wound through central Dhaka on Wednesday. Many waved the national flag and demanded the death penalty for the now-detained owner of the doomed building. From a loudspeaker on the back of a truck, a participant spoke for the throngs gathered: "My brother has died. My sister has died. Their blood will not be valueless."

The Bangladesh tragedy drew a denunciation from Pope Francis as he addressed worshippers at a private Mass at the Vatican. He blasted what he called the "slave" wages of those who died, many of whom were being buried Wednesday as other bodies were still being pulled from the rubble. Francis criticized the focus on `'balance books" and personal profit that he said are tied to the failure to pay workers fair wages.

In Greece and Spain, increasing numbers of people are losing their jobs as governments grappling with a debt crisis have been forced to cut spending, raise taxes and pursue other painful austerity measures in return for various international bailout packages. Both countries have unemployment rates hovering just above 27 percent.

Unions in Greece held a May Day strike that brought ferry and train services to a halt, and organized peaceful protest marches through central Athens. The country, which nearly went bankrupt in 2010, is now in its sixth year of a deep recession. While the austerity drive has succeeded in reducing high budget deficits, it has been at a huge cost: under the terms of its latest loan disbursement, Athens has agreed to sack about 15,000 civil servants through 2014.

"We are here to send a message to ... those in power in Europe, that we will continue our struggle against unfair, open-ended policies that are destroying millions of jobs on a national and European level," said Kostas Tsikrikas, leader of Greek public sector labor union ADEDY.

More than 100,000 Spaniards infuriated by austerity measures and economic recession took to the streets of some 80 cities in trade union-organized rallies Wednesday, with the largest protests in Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao.

Under banners reading "Fight for your rights," union leaders Ignacio Fernandez Toxo of Workers Commissions and Candido Mendez of the General Workers Union called on the government to reverse its austerity drive and urged politicians to agree an all-party economic plan aimed at creating jobs.

Francisco Moreno, an unemployed bookkeeper, scoffed at Spanish leaders' calls on the public to be patient. "You can only be patient if you have savings, money in the bank," the 47-year-old said. "You can't be patient if you have no income and kids to feed."

May Day events in Turkey turned violent when some demonstrators, angered at a government ban on a symbolic rally point, hurled stones, gasoline bombs and fireworks at riot police. Security forces used water cannon and tear gas to prevent crowds from accessing Taksim Square, and Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu said 22 police officers and at least three passersby were injured. More than 72 demonstrators were arrested.

The square is the city's main hub and is undergoing a major facelift. Authorities banned celebrations at Taksim this year, citing construction safety risks, and partially suspended public transport services to prevent large gatherings there. But trade unions had vowed to mark May Day in Taksim, which has symbolic importance because dozens of protesters were killed there in 1977 when unidentified gunmen opened fire on May Day celebrators.

"Taksim is our sacred venue. Open it up to the workers!" demanded Kani Beko, leader of a major labor union confederation.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt became a target of both booing and a water pistol during a May Day parade in her country, where some believe that she has been leaning too far to the right to uphold the goals of her leftist Social Democratic Party.

Boos and whistles from protesters forced Thorning-Schmidt to abort her speech to thousands at the gathering in Aarhus, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) northwest of Copenhagen. Then, as she was walking to her car, a man squirted water on her with a water pistol. Police spokesman Carsten Dahl said police had detained the 23-year-old man, but the premier was not injured.

Swedish police said seven people were arrested and five were injured as counter-demonstrators tried to interrupt a May Day parade by right-wing extremists in the southern city of Jonkoping. Police spokesman Goran Gunnarsson said 60 others were briefly detained as officers tried to keep the two sides apart.

In Indonesia, the world's fourth-most populous country, tens of thousands of workers rallied for higher pay and other demands. Some also carried banners reading: "Sentence corruptors to death and seize their properties" to protest a proposal for the government to slash fuel subsidies that have kept the country's pump prices among the cheapest in the region.

In the Philippines, an estimated 8,000 workers marched in Manila to also demand better pay and regular jobs instead of contractual work. Some rallied outside the U.S. Embassy, torching a wooden painting stamped with the words "low wages" and "union busting" that depicted Philippine President Benigno Aquino III as a lackey of President Barack Obama.

More than 10,000 Taiwanese protested a government plan to cut pension payouts to solve worsening fiscal problems, saying it reflects a longstanding government policy to bolster economic growth at the expense of workers' benefits. Analysts say poor income levels have forced many young Taiwanese to share housing with their parents and delay marriages.

And in Cambodia, more than 5,000 garment workers marched in Phnom Penh, demanding better working conditions and a salary increase from $80 to $150 a month. About a half million people work in the country's $4.6 billion garment industry, which makes brand name clothes for many U.S. and European retailers.

On International Workers’ Day, united struggle against capitalism and imperialism

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

பாOn the occasion of International Workers Day, May 1, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine called for the Palestinian right of return, self-determination and independence, emphasizing the continuing struggle to dismantle the Zionist project on Palestinian land and to continue the struggle against poverty, oppression and occupation.

The Front saluted the workers of the world and the oppressed and marginalized people of the world on this day, expressing the unity of common struggle against common enemies, with renewed determination to struggle to defeat capitalism, colonialism and imperialism. These have perpetuated poverty against the oppressed peoples of the world and seek to control our peoples, capabilities and resources, using the power of finance capital and economic domination alongside military fleets in attacking countries and peoples around the world, in an attempt to hold the entire world at the mercy of capitalist management.

However, the Front noted, economic and social crises have made this impossible, as well as the strength and continued struggle of the peoples of the world and revolutionary and progressive forces, which have led to retreats in the globalization of capitalism and the rise of a multipolar world as well as broad social movements against capitalism and globalizaition.

This reaffirms that the workers and their allies, united will be able in all circumstances to confront and thwart capitalism and achieve their goals of justice and full equality, said the Front.

The workers of Palestine are most vulnerable to oppression and exploitation, said the Front, due to the occupation and siege, which has increased unemployment up to 40% and the poverty rate to nearly 39%. This impacts the entire Palestinian society, the Front noted.

The solution to this situation is found first in ending the occupation that embodies the mating of Zionism and capitalism, and which serves as the head of the spear in our region to defend the interests of those who exploit and oppress our people, said the Front.

The Front called for an end to internal Palestinian division, restoring national unity to confront the occupation and demand the full implementation of the rights of the Palestinian people. It emphasized that policies of economic and social justice for workers, the poor and marginalized are critical to reduce unemployment and poverty among our people, including ending policies of privatization. Further, the Front noted the need to unify the labor unions through holding democratic elections with the participation of all on the basis of full proportional representation.

The Front called for intensified efforts to build connections and solidarity with friends of the Palestinian people around the world, in particular left-wing and communist forces, to boycott the Zionist entity at all levels as a racist regime similar to the apartheid regime in South Africa, which was boycotted and isolated by the free peoples of the world in the 1980s.

Student banned from representing Tamil culture at multicultural assembly

LONDON, Ont. — A student in London, Ont. is crying foul after his high school barred him from carrying a controversial flag at a multicultural assembly.

Kumar Makandu, a Grade 12 student at Central secondary school, had carried a Tamil flag at the annual assembly for the past two years but was told by administration leading up to the event on Friday that he couldn’t showcase the flag.

For Tamils, an ethnic group living primarily in northeast Sri Lanka, the flag is a national symbol representing the movement to create an independent state. It depicts a tiger jumping through a circle of bullets -- though Makandu says it’s the sun -- with two crossed bayonets.

Central principal Jim Robertson decided only the flags from internationally recognized countries would be included in the assembly after a student last year mistakenly thought the Tamil flag was connected to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a militant group that fought the Sri Lankan military in a bloody civil war from 1983 to 2009.

“We’re not trying to get into the politics of aspirational governments,” Robertson said. “I don’t want students to feel threatened.”

But Makandu said there’s no connection between the Tamil flag to the Liberation Tigers, an organization the Canadian government put on its terrorism list in 2006.

“If I can’t even bring my flag up, how can I share my culture?” said Makandu, adding he spoke to many of his fellow students prior to the assembly and they told him they had no problem with him carrying the flag.

Makandu showed up for the assembly wearing a shirt depicting the Tamil flag, but a teacher promptly asked him to take it off.

He did so, not wanting to create trouble, and walked under the Sri Lankan flag at the assembly.

“It’s pretty upsetting that I can’t represent my culture in a multicultural country like Canada where we embrace other cultures,” he said.

சர்வதேசமெங்கும் வாழுகின்ற உழைக்கும் மக்களும், ஒடுக்கப்படும் தேசங்களும் தங்கள் உரிமைகளுக்கும் விடுதலைக்குமாக ஒன்றிணைந்து குரல் எழுப்பும் பெரு நாளும், திரு நாளும், போர் நாளும் மே நாளே ஆகும்.

இதற்கு ஈடாக உலக மக்களை ஒன்றிணைக்கின்ற ஒரு பொது நாள் - பொது குறிக்கோள்-என்று ஒன்று, மே நாளுக்கு ஈடாக இல்லை.இதுவரையிலும் இல்லை , இனிமேலும் இல்லை.

கம்யூனிஸ்ட் கட்சி அறிக்கையில் நமது ஆசான்களும், மூலவர்களும் முழங்கியவாறு `உலகத் தொழிலாளர்களே ஒன்று சேருங்கள்` என்கிற எமது ஆதாரப் பாதை சரியானதென்பதை ஒவ்வொரு மே நாளும் எமக்கு எடுத்துரைத்து, இடித்துரைத்து, வருகின்றது.

எனினும் மே நாளும் கூட வர்க்கப் போராட்ட விதிக்கு உட்பட்டதுதான். இந்நாளிலும் எதிரிகளின் முத்திரை பொறிக்கப்பட்ட களியாட்டங்களும், விழாக்களும்,நடந்த வண்ணம் தான் உள்ளன!

யாழ் மாவட்ட விவசாயிகள் தமது உற்பத்திப் பொருட்களைச் சந்தைப்படுத்த முடியாமல் திண்டாடும் நிலமை தொடர் கதையாகவே காணப்படுகின்றது. இந்த வகையில் சுன்னாகம் பகுதியில் தக்காளிச் செய்கையில் ஈடுபட்ட விவசாயிகள் தமது உற்பத்திப் பொருளான தக்காளிப் பழத்தை சந்தைப்படுத்த முடியாத நிலையில் அதனை மாட்டுக்கு தீவனமாக தோட்டத்தில் கொட்டிவிட்டு செல்கின்றனர்.

இதேவேளை உடுவில் பிரதேச விவசாயிகளின் உற்பத்திப் பொருட்களான பழவகைகளை கொள்வனவு செய்து அதனை சந்தைப்படுத்தி ஜாம் மற்றும் கோடியல் ஜீஸ் போன்ற உற்பத்திகளை மேற் கொள்ளும் வகையில் பல லட்சம் ரூபா செலவில் உடுவில் பகுதியில் தொழிற் சாலையை ஜக்கிய நாடுகளுக்கான அபிவிருத்தி நிறுவனம் அமைத்துக்கொடுத்துள்ள போதிலும் இந்த விவசாயிகளின் சந்தைப்படுத்த முடியாத பழவகைகளை கொள்வனவு செய்வதில் உரிய நிறுவனம் அக்கறை எடுப்பதில்லையெனவும் விவசாயிகள் கவலை தெரிவிக்கின்றார்கள்.

Nearly half a million households connected to SLT Broadband

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) recently launched its 100 Mbps “ultra-fast” broadband offering, which will be available to subscribers through a direct, fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network.

Elaborating, SLT’s launch announcement noted; “Fibre access networks have ultra high speed and lower latency, which means that there is no noticeable delay in exchanging information. Fibre networks are robust and immune to electrical interference. In comparison to wireless, users do not share limited frequencies with other users, and there is no electronic interference. Thus end users get the same speed regardless of the number of users or distance from the cabinet”.

Further, it was also indicated; “Through an FTTH connection, users will be able to get access to multiple-services such as high definition channels on Peo TV, high speed internet access, DATA services, video on demand, Wi-Fi, VoIP, live feeds, online education, online gaming, teleworking, video conferencing, e-services etc.

with immense freedom and without any bandwidth limitations. Ultra-fast FTTH broadband access also enables substantial productivity gains for the small & medium enterprises and micro-level businesses across the country, giving them access to cloud computing, e-application benefits etc. and they can easily be served from a typical FTTH network with the highest reliability ensuring huge advantages. The company believes there will be a definite exponential demand within the next few years”.

Additionally revealed; “Among the SLT Broadband packages, Web Master, Web Champ and Web Life are offered with 100 Mbps download speed and Web Family, Web Surfer and Web Pro are offered with 50 Mbps download speed through the FTTH connection. Also existing Peo TV packages with HD channels will be available as an option”.

Quoted in the announcement, Lalith De Silva, Group Chief Executive Officer, SLT, stated; “At present, nearly half a million households are connected to SLT Broadband services and we are seeking to connect them in the future through the world’s most reliable connectivity option, fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) / fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) to upgrade and enhance user experience and also to empower them with endless possibilities and unlimited opportunities”.

தஞ்சை: சீமான் அதிமுக வேட்பாளர்களை ஆதரித்து பிரச்சாரம் செய்வதை எதிர்த்து தஞ்சையில் நாம் தமிழர் கட்சி கலைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

நாம் தமிழர் கட்சியின் தலைவர் சீமான் அதிமுக வேட்பாளர்களுக்கு ஆதரவாக பிரச்சாரம் செய்து வருகிறார். இதற்கு நாம் தமிழர் கட்சியில் எதிர்ப்பு கிளம்பியுள்ளது. இது குறித்த அவசரக் கூட்டம் தஞ்சை தெற்கு மாவட்ட தலைவர் பாப்பாநாடு காமராஜர் தலைமையில் நடந்தது.

கூட்டத்தில் மாவட்ட செயலாளர் பழ. சக்திவேல் கூறுகையில், திராவிட கட்சிகளை அழித்துவிட்டு 2016ம் ஆண்டில் ஒரு தமிழனை ஆட்சிக்கு கொண்டு வருவோம் என்று தெரிவித்துவிட்டு தற்போது சீமான் திராவிட கட்சிக்கு வாக்கு சேகரிப்பது கேள்விக்குறியாகவும், பிறர் நகைக்கும்படியும் உள்ளது.

ஒரே நேரத்தில் 40 தொகுதிகளிலும் 40 நிலைப்பாடுகள் என்பது தமிழக மக்கள் மற்றும் அவரை நம்பி வந்த இளைஞர்கள் ஆகியோரை ஏமாற்றுவதாக உள்ளது. அவரின் நிலைப்பாட்டில் எங்களுக்கு உடன்பாடு இல்லை. அதனால் தஞ்சை தெற்கு மாவட்ட நாம் தமிழர் கட்சி பொறுப்பாளர்கள் அனைவரும் கட்சியில் இருந்து விலகுகிறோம். மேலும் மாவட்ட கட்சியும் கலைக்கப்படுகிறது என்றார்.

புதிய இன வாழையால் பொருளாதார இழப்பு விவசாயிகள் கவலை

புதிதாக அறிமுகம் செய்யப்பட்ட கெவண்டீஸ் இன வாழைச் செய்கை மூலம் அறுவடை செய்யப்படும் வாழைக்குலை மற்றும் வாழைப்பழத்தைச் சந்தைப்படுத்த முடியாத நிலையால் தாம் பொருளாதார இழப்புக்கு உள்ளாகி இருப்பதாக விவசாயிகள் கவலை தெரிவிக்கின்றனர்.

இளைய வளர்ப்பு முறையில் வெளிமாவட்டங்களில் உற்பத்தி செய்யப்பட்ட கெவிண்டீஸ் இன வாழை நாற்றுக்கள் தனியார் நிறுவனங்களால் கவர்ச்சிகரமான விளம்பரத்துடன் யாழ்.மாவட்டத்தில் விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டன. சிறிய அளவிலான பைகளில் நடுகை செய்யப்பட்டு ஒன்று 125 ரூபாவுக்கு மேல் 175 ரூபா வரையும் விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டன.

உயரம் குறைவானதும் காற்றுக்கு சாயாததும் நிறை கூடிய குலைகளை தரும் என்ற கவர்ச்சியான விளம்பரத்தை நம்பி விவசாயிகள் தமது தோட்டங்களிலும் பலர் வீடுகளிலும் அவற்றை நடுகை செய்தனர். 

ஆனால் அறுவடை செய்யப்படும் கெவண்டீஸ் வாழைக் குலைகளை யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் நல்ல விலைக்கு விற்க முடியாத நிலையில் செய்கையாளர்கள் உள்ளனர்.
உள்ளூர் கதலி வாழைக் குலையிலும் குறைவான விலையில் ஒரு கிலோ 15 ரூபாவுக்குக் குறைவாகவே விற்கக் கூடியதாக உள்ளது.

கெவண்டீஸ் வாழைப்பழம்  சுவையிலும் மாறுபட்டதாக உள்ளது. இனிப்புத்  தன்மை இவற்றில் மிக மிகக் குறைவு. பழம்  பச்சை நிறம் கொண்டது. சாதாரண வாழைப் பழங்களிலும் பார்க்க நீளமானது. இதனை உள்ளூர் மக்கள் விரும்பிக் கொள்வனவு செய்வதில்லை.

ஆனால் வெளி மாவட்டங்களுக்கும் எடுத்துச் செல்லத் தயங்குகின்றனர். யாழ்.மாவட்டத்தின் வெப்ப நிலை வீச்சு வறட்சிக்கு தாக்குப் பிடிக்க முடியாத நிலையில் மிகக் குறைந்த காலத்தில் கெவிண்டீஸ் வாழை குருத்தடைப்பு மற்றும் வெள்ளைக் குருத்து நோய்களுக்கு உள்ளாகி வருவதாகவும் கூறப்படுகின்றது.

யாழ்.மாவட்டத்தில் புதிய பயிர் இனங்களை அறிமுகம் செய்யும்போது மாவட்ட நிலையை கருத்தில் கொள்ளாமலும் விவசாயிகளின் நலனை மற்றும் சந்தைப்படுத்தல் வசதிகளை கருத்தில் கொள்ளாமலும், அறிமுகம் செய்யப்படுவதால் விவசாயிகள் பெருமளவில் பாதிப்புக்கு உள்ளாவதாக விசனம் தெரிவிக்கப்படுகின்றது.

சிறிலங்காவில் நடந்த இறுதிக்கட்டப் போரில், இந்தியப் படையினர் நேரடியாகப் பங்கெடுத்துள்ளதாகவும், இந்திய நாடாளுமன்றத்தினதோ, குடியரசுத் தலைவரினதோ ஒப்புதலின்றி இந்தியப் படையினர் சிறிலங்காவுக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கப்பட்டது குறித்து சிறப்பு விசாரணை நடத்தி சம்பந்தப்பட்டோர் மீது சட்ட நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கக் கோரி இந்திய உயர்நீதிமன்றத்தில் மனு ஒன்று சமர்ப்பிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. 

புதுடெல்லியைச் சேர்ந்த, டெல்லி தமிழ் சட்டவாளர் சங்கத்தின் செயலாளரான ராம்சங்கர் என்ற சட்டவாளரே இந்த மனுவைச் சமர்ப்பித்துள்ளார். 

கடந்தவாரம் சமர்ப்பிக்கப்பட்ட இந்த மனு மீதான விசாரணை வரும் நாளை மறுநாள் (17-04-2014)நடத்தப்படவுள்ளது. 

இந்த (இந்தியப் படை) நடவடிக்கைக்கு சீக்கிய அதிகாரி ஒருவரே தலைமை தாங்கியதாகவும், இந்தியப் படையினர் சிலர் போரில் காயமடைந்ததாகவும் இந்த மனுவில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. 

சிறிலங்காவில் தமிழ் சிறுபான்மையினருக்கு எதிராக நடத்தப்பட்ட உள்நாட்டுப் போரில், சிறிலங்கா படைகளுக்கு உதவுவதற்காக 2008 ம், 2009 ம் ஆண்டுகளில் இந்திய இராணுவ, கடற்படை, மற்றும் விமானப்படையினர் சட்டவிரோதமாக அனுப்பி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாக இந்த மனுவில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. 

போர்ப் பிரகடனம் ஒன்று செய்யப்படாமல்- இந்திய ஆயுதப்படைகளின் பிரதம தளபதி என்ற வகையில் குடியரசுத் தலைவரின் ஒப்புதல் பெறப்படாமல்- அரசியலமைப்பின் 246வது பிரிவுக்கு அமைய, நாடாளுமன்ற அனுமதி பெறப்படாமலேயே இவர்கள் சிறிலங்காவுக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர் என்றும் இந்த மனுவில் சுட்டிக்காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது. 

அனைத்துலக மனிதாபிமான முன்னெடுப்புகளுக்காக தாம் பல முறை சிறிலங்காவுக்குச் சென்று வந்துள்ளதாக சட்டவாளர் ராம் சங்கர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். 

கிளிநொச்சி, முல்லைத்தீவு மீதான தாக்குதலின் போது தலைப்பாகை கட்டிய இந்திய அதிகாரி ஒருவர் ஆயுதப்படைகளுக்கு தலைமை தாங்குவதை தாம் கண்டதாக, புகலிடக் கோரிக்கையாளர்கள் அனைத்துலக விசாரணையில் 
சாட்சியமளித்துள்ளதாகவும் அவர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். 

போர்ப் பிரகடனம் செய்யப்படாமலேயே, சிறிலங்கா படைகளுக்கு ஆதரவாகவும், உடந்தையாகவும், இந்தியப் படையினரை சிறிலங்காவில் நிறுத்தியுள்ளனர். 

இராணுவ விவகாரங்களைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தும் அதிகாரம் கொண்ட நாடாளுமன்றத்துக்கும் இது வெளிப்படுத்தப்படவில்லை. 

இந்தியாவின் பாதுகாப்பு தவிர, வேறு எந்தக் காரணத்துக்காகவும் இந்திய ஆயுதப்படைகளை பயன்படுத்த இந்திய அரசியலமைப்பில் அதிகாரம் அளிக்கப்படவில்லை. 

உள்நாட்டு போரில், தமிழ்ப் போராளிகளுக்கு எதிராக, சிறிலங்கா ஆயுதப்படைகளுக்கு உதவியாக, இந்திய ஆயுதப்படைகள் 2008, 2009 காலப்பகுதியில் இரகசிய நடவடிக்கைகளில் ஈடுபடுத்தப்பட்டனர். 

இதுகுறித்து ஐ.நா பொதுச்செயலர் பான் கீ மூன் நியமித்த சுதந்திர அனைத்துலக நிபுணர் குழுவின் அறிக்கையில் 56வது பந்தியில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. 

இந்த அறிக்கை 2011 மார்ச் 31ம் நாள் வெளியிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.” என்றும் இந்த மனுவில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. 

சிறிலங்காவில் உள்ள இந்திய வம்சாவளியினர் உள்ளிட்ட தமிழர்களுக்கு எதிரான இந்திய ஆயுதப்படைகளின் கூட்டுப் பங்கு தொடர்பாக, விசாரிக்க இந்திய உயர்நீதிமன்றம் தனது கட்டுப்பாட்டின் கீழ் சிறப்பு விசாரணைக் குழுவொன்றை அமைக்க வேண்டும் என்றும், அது சுயாதீனமாக நடத்தப்படுவதை கண்காணிக்குமாறும், சட்டவாளர் ராம் சங்கர் தனது மனுவில் கோரியுள்ளார். 

சிறிலங்காவில் தமிழ் சிறுபான்மையினரின் உயிர்கள், உடமைகளுக்கு எதிராக இழைக்கப்பட்ட குற்றங்கள் குறித்து, விசாரித்து, அதில் சம்பந்தப்பட்டவர்களை சிறப்புத் தீர்ப்பாயம் முன்பாக நிறுத்தி விசாரிக்கும்படி அதிகாரிகளுக்கு உத்தரவிட வேண்டும் என்றும், பாதிக்கப்பட்ட குடும்பங்களுக்கு உடனடியாக நட்டஈடு வழங்க அவர்களுக்கு உத்தரவிட வேண்டும் என்றும் இந்த மனுவில் கோரப்பட்டுள்ளது. 

இந்த மனுவில், பாதுகாப்பு, வெளிவிவகார, மற்றும் உள்துறை அமைச்சுக்களை பிரதிவாதிகளாக குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Another Color Revolution? The Deceptive Use of the Phrase “Peaceful Protests” in Venezuela

The opposition and much of the national and international media claim that the “peaceful protesters” are demonstrating against concrete problems such as insecurity, scarcities and inflation. But the protesters have failed to put forward any specific proposals to correct these problems. Their sole aim at this point is regime change, as leaders such as María Corina Machado and López himself have explicitly stated on occasion. This is not to deny that opposition leaders have a hidden agenda of specific changes which they intend to implement once in power.

A low voter turnout was the highlight of yesterday’s polls for the Southern and Western Provincial Councils.

50-55 per cent voter turn out-Officials

There was a 55 to 60 per cent voter turn out at today’s Provincial Council Elections held in the Southern and Western Provinces, election officials said a short while ago.

They said the lowest voter turnout was in the Colombo district with 49 per cent while the highest was recorded in the Hambantota District with 61 per cent.

The voter turn out in the Matara District was 58 per cent, 55 per cent in Galle the District, 57 per cent in the Gampaha District and 58 per cent in Kalutara District, they added.

These figures were also supported by the independent polls monitoring group-the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PaFFREL)

Sharp drop in turnout at PC polls

A low voter turnout was the highlight of yesterday’s polls for the Southern and Western Provincial Councils.
Whilst the average polling for most districts was around 55 per cent, the biggest district of Colombo recorded a drastic low, according to figures from the Department of Elections.

Barring one clash in Beruwala between supporters of the UPFA and the UNP, no major incidents were reported, police said. Four people were injured in the Beruwala clash. The polling took place in 4,243 centres across the two provinces where more than 5.8 million people were eligible to vote. A total of 155

members will be elected to the two provincial councils — 102 to the WPC and 53 to the SPC. More than 3,700 candidates from 81 political parties and 42 independent groups contested the poll.

There was a sharp drop in the polling this year compared to the polls held to the two councils in 2009. That year there was a 63 per cent turnout in the Western Province and 70 per cent in the Southern Province. There was tight security yesterday with more than 12,000 police personnel deployed for election-related
