Amid protests, Putin becomes president for third time
MOSCOW - Vladimir V. Putin took over as Russian president for the third time Monday, even as hundreds protested against his taking over the mantle again.

The outgoing prime minister, who turns 60 this year, has served two presidential terms between 2000 and 2008. Putin took the oath of office at a grand ceremony at the Kremlin.
The streets were near empty as police had passed orders to detain anyone wearing a white ribbon, the opposition's symbol.

On Sunday, around 400 people were detained, including opposition leaders Sergei Udaltsov, Aleksei Navalny, and Boris Nemtsov, for holding anti-Putin protests.

After his swearing in, Putin named outgoing president Dmitry Medvedev to be prime minister.

In a brief speech following his taking over, Putin pledged to strengthen democracy in Russia.
"I will do all I can to justify the faith of millions of our citizens," he said. "I consider it the meaning of my whole life and my duty to serve my fatherland and our people."

He said Russia is entering "a new stage of national development" and that the next few years will be "decisive" for the country.

The ceremony was attended by ministers, religious leaders and some international figures, including former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Meanwhile, police Monday detained some 120 protesters, including Boris Nemtsov, for holding demonstrations in Moscow.

Putin has indicated he may run for a fourth six-year term too, meaning he could remain in power until 2024.

On the first of May, International Workers’ Day, we salute the Palestinian homeland – the workers and peasants, men and women, youth and elders, everywhere they are, in Palestine or in diaspora and exile.
May 1 this year is a scene of struggle for the liberation of the Palestinian people, as we mark
the struggle of the Palestinian national movement of prisoners who continue an open-ended hunger
strike in defense of their rights, to stop the brutal racist abuses of the occupation
authorities and its prisons against them. Our pioneering Palestinian working class is
contributing the largest share in the national democratic and social struggle, standing with all
of its strengh alongside the struggles of prisoners on hunger strike, in order to achieve their
demands to end solitary confinement, isolation and the “Shalit law,” and the resumption of
visits so as to maintain their human dignity, on the road to liberation from the occpation. The
process of Palestinian liberation will never reach its national, democratic or social goals
without the direct involvement and effective leadership of the Palestinian working class in the
struggle for national liberation, for freedom and national self-determination.

The Palestinian working class in all political spheres is the basic driver for the social and democratic project of Palestinian national liberation, and we can only say that despite the long
struggle ahead, the Palestinian left will build the power of hope and the will for change, for the struggle for liberation and return, and for our rights to liberty, justice, democracy and progress.

 Our Palestinian working class is suffering desperately in the current conditions of the Palestinian people, reeling from the blows of occupation, siege, aggression and exploitation
inside and outside Palestine. In the current conditions of the Arab peoples, it is critical to promote and develop trade union organizations, consciousness, and political unity of forces. The
current moment of Arab street protests and uprisings against oppression in all forms and struggles for democracy requires a review of the role of the Arab left to promote the unity of the Arab peoples’ struggle against dependency, corruption, tyranny and foreign intervention, and for liberation, dignity, freedom, democracy, justice and social progress.

O, Palestinian workers, our heroic Palestinian people..

Our Palestinian working class in the occupied homeland are under geographical and political
attack, bleeding fromm many wounds, but this does not prevent the voice of struggle of the
Palestinian working class for improved working conditions and reducing unemployment which is
approximately 50% in both the Gaza Strip and West Bank, and work to protect workers’ rights and
serve workers’ interests.

Resisting the historical and continuing iinjustice against the Palestinian people requires us to
raise the struggle of the working class and its historical perseverence as an avenue to raise
its influence in national decision-making, something that would not be possible without the
struggle of working class Palestinians for democracy and social rights.

On the first of May, we confirm that the first step is to end the current Palestinian division
and political disintegration and put aside narrow factional interests in the interests of the
unity of the people and their struggle. Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza are still suffering
from aggression, siege, starvation, and crisis, and this means that unity must come first, and
unity is the inalienable choice of the Palestinian people. At the same time building an economy
of resistance and national steadfastness must be an economic priority before any other interest,
to protect workers, economic and social rights, fight corruption, adopt the minimum wage and
social protection in order to end the situation of work in the settlements and return instead to
the cultivation of agriculture and protection and development of sectors, sources, and natural
and productive resources, and salvation from dependence on the market and the occupation
economy.

We salute the heroic prisoners who are splitting the sky to achieve their rights to dignity and
freedom, and salute all progressive forces around the world who raise the banners of struggle
and solidarity against the occupation and for freedom, justice, self-determnation and
sovereignty of the Palestinian people.

ஈழத் தமிழர்களின் ஜனநாயக உரிமைகளுக்காக குரல் கொடுப்போம்

 சிங்கள இனவெறி இராஜபட்சே அரசு 2009ஆம் ஆண்டு ஈழத் தமிழின அழிப்புப்போரை முடிவுக்கு கொண்டுவந்த பிறகு ஈழத்தமிழர்களுக்கான ஒரு அரசியல் தீர்வை காண மறுத்து வருகிறது. தமிழர் பகுதிகளான வடக்கையும் கிழக்கையும் இணைத்து தமிழர் தாயகம் என்பதையும் ஏற்க மறுக்கிறது. ஈழத் தமிழர்கள் பகுதிகள் முழுவதும் சிங்கள இராணுவம் ஆக்கிரமித்துள்ளது. அது மக்களின் அன்றாட நடவடிக்கைகளில் ஈடுபடுகிறது. முகாம்களில் அடைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள இலட்சக்கணக்கான தமிழ்மக்களை அவர்களின் சொந்த வாழ்விடங்களில் குடியமர்த்த மறுப்பதுடன், தமிழர் பகுதிகளில் சிங்கள குடியேற்றத்தைத் திட்டமிட்டு நிறைவேற்றி வருகிறது. சிறைபிடிக்கப்பட்ட பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான போராளிகள் கதி என்னவாயிற்று என்பதே தெரியவில்லை. இராஜபட்சே கும்பல் தமிழர்கள் மீது மட்டுமல்லாது தமது ஆட்சிக்கு எதிரான சிங்கள எதிர்க்கட்சியினர், மனித உரிமை அமைப்புகள், பத்திரிக்கையாளர்கள் மீது கடும் தாக்குதலை நடத்திவருகிறது. அது இலங்கை முழுவதையும் ஒரு இராணுவ சர்வாதிகார ஆட்சியின் கீழ் கொண்டுவந்துள்ளது.

 இலங்கையில் வாழும் ஈழத் தமிழ்த் தேசிய இனச் சிக்கலுக்கு அரசியல் தீர்வு என்பது ஈழத்தமிழ் தேசிய இனத்தின் சுயநிர்ணய உரிமை வழங்குவதன் மூலம் மட்டுமே காணமுடியும். அதைவிடுத்து எந்த ஒரு அதிகாரபரவலும் சிங்கள இனவெறி அரசின் கீழ் சாத்தியமே இல்லை. ஆனால் உடனடியாக அம்மக்களின் ஜனநாயக உரிமையை வென்றெடுப்பதுதான் அனைத்திற்கும் முதன்மையானதாக மாறியுள்ளது. வடக்கையும் கிழக்கையும் இணைத்து அதை தமிழர் தாயகமாக அங்கீகரிப்பது, தமிழர் பகுதிகளிலிருந்து சிங்கள இராணுவத்தை திரும்பப் பெறுவது, சிங்கள குடியேற்றங்களை அகற்றுவது, மாநில மற்றும் உள்ளாட்சி அமைப்புகளில் தமிழர்கள் தங்கள் உரிமையை பெறுவது போன்ற கோரிக்கைகளை உடனடியாக போராடிப் பெறுவது அவசியமாகும். இத்தகைய ஜனநாயக உரிமைகளை பெறுவதற்கு இலங்கையில் வாழும் இரு தேசிய இன மக்களும் ஒன்றிணைந்து போராடுவதற்கான வாய்ப்பு அதிகரித்துள்ளது. இவ்வாறு ஈழத்தமிழ் மக்களின் அரசியல் ஜனநாயக உரிமைகளை வென்றெடுப்பதற்கான போராட்டத்திற்கு உலகெங்கிலுமுள்ள தொழிலாளி வர்க்க இயக்கங்களும், ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட தேசங்களும் ஆதரவளிக்கவேண்டும்.

 அமெரிக்க ஏகாதிபத்தியவாதிகள் ஐ.நா. மனித உரிமை அமைப்பில் இலங்கைக்கு எதிராக கொண்டுவந்துள்ள தீர்மானம் சிங்கள இன வெறியன் இராஜபட்சே கும்பலை இன அழிப்புப் போர்க்குற்றவாளி என்று அறிவிக்கக் கோருவதல்ல. 2010ஆம் ஆண்டில் டப்ளின் மக்கள் தீர்ப்பாயம் வழங்கிய தீர்ப்புகளிலிருந்து உலக மக்களை திசைதிருப்பி, இலங்கையின் மீது அமெரிக்காவின் மேலாதிக்கத்தை கொண்டுவருவதற்கானதேயாகும். குற்றவாளியான இராஜபட்சேவையே நீதிபதியாகக் கொண்டு “கற்றுக்கொண்ட பாடம் மற்றும் மறுசீரமைப்பு” என்ற இலங்கை அரசாங்கம் தயாரித்த அறிக்கையை செயல்படுத்துவது என்பதேயாகும்.

 டப்ளின் தீர்ப்பாயம், அமெரிக்கா, பிரிட்டன் போன்ற நாடுகள் இலங்கை அரசுடனான விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் பேச்சு வார்த்தையை சீர்குலைத்ததன் மூலமும், இலங்கை அரசுக்கு ஆயுத மற்றும் பொருளாதார உதவிகள் செய்ததன் மூலமும் இலங்கை அரசின் இன அழிப்புப் போருக்கு துணைபோயின என்று கூறியது. போர் நடக்கும் போது இந்நாடுகள் வேடிக்கைப் பார்த்தன என்றும் எனவே இந்நாடுகள் போர்க் குற்றத்திற்கு துணை போயின என்று குற்றம் சுமத்தியிருந்தது. எனவே இதையெல்லாம் மூடி மறைத்து இலங்கை அரசையும், இராஜபட்சே கும்பலையும் மிரட்டி பணிய வைக்கவே தற்போது அமெரிக்கா மனித உரிமை பேசி இலங்கையில் தலையிடுகிறது. இந்திய அரசாங்கமோ அந்தத் தீர்மானத்திலும் திருத்தம் கொண்டுவந்து ஆதரித்தது. இராஜபட்சேவுக்கு சாதகமாகத்தான் நாங்கள் செயல்பட்டோம் என்று மன்மோகன் சிங் கடிதம் எழுதி தமது விசுவாசத்தைக் காட்டிக் கொண்டார். மேலும் இந்தப் போரை இந்தியாவிற்காக நாங்கள் நடத்தினோம் என்று இராஜபட்சே கும்பல் கூறியது. இந்திய அரசு போரை முன்னின்று நடத்தியது. இவர்களும் போர்க்குற்றவாளிகளே.

இந்தியாவை பொறுத்தவரை சீனாவின் பக்கம் இலங்கை சாய்ந்துவிடுவதை தடுப்பது ஒன்றுதான் நோக்கமாகும். இந்தத் தீர்மானத்தால் ஈழத் தமிழ் மக்களுக்கு எந்தவிதமான அரசியல் தீர்வும் கிடைக்கப் போவதில்லை. சுஷ்மா சுவராஜ் தலைமையிலான இந்தியத் தூதுக்குழுவின் நடவடிக்கைகளே இதற்கு நல்லதொரு சான்றாக அமைந்துள்ளது.

 மறுபுறம் அமெரிக்காவை எதிர்ப்பதாக கூறும் ரசிய ஏகாதிபத்தியவாதிகளும், சீனாவும் இலங்கையின் உள்விவகாரத்தில் தலையிடக் கூடாது என்றும், நாடுகளின் இறையாண்மையை காப்பது என்ற ஐ.நா சாசனத்தை மீறக்கூடாது என்றும், அமெரிக்காவின் மேலாதிக்கத்தை எதிர்ப்பதாகவும் கூறுகின்றன. ஆனால் இவ்வாறுக் கூறிக்கொண்டு மனித உரிமையை மீறி ஒரு இனத்தையே அழித்துவரும் இராஜபட்சேக் கும்பலை இவர்கள் ஆதரிப்பது ஏற்கத் தகுந்தது அல்ல. இவர்களும் இலங்கை மீதான தங்களது செல்வாக்கு மண்டலத்தை விரிவுப்படுத்துவதற்காகத்தான் இலங்கை அரசுக்கு துணைபோகின்றனர்.

எனவே இரண்டு ஏகாதிபத்திய முகாம்களின் சதியை எதிர்த்து இலங்கையில் இரு தேசிய இன மக்களும் இராஜபட்சேவின் இராணுவ சர்வாதிகாரத்தை எதிர்த்த  போராட்டத்திற்கு ஆதரவளிப்பதே ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட நாட்டு மக்களின் உடனடிக் கடமையாகும்.

 எனவே இவ்வாண்டு மேநாளில், முதலாளித்துவ நெருக்கடியிலிருந்து மக்கள் தொகையில் ஒரு சதவீதமே உள்ள நிதிமூலதன கும்பல்களையும், ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட நாடுகளின் பிற்போக்கு ஆளும் வர்க்கங்களையும் பாதுகாக்கும் அமெரிக்காவின் தலைமையிலான ஏகாதிபத்தியவாதிகளையும், அவர்களின் எடுபிடிகளின் கூட்டத்தை முறியடிக்கவும், உலகத் தொழிலாளர்கள் மற்றும் ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட நாடுகளின் விடுதலையை வென்றெடுக்கவும் கீழ்கண்ட முழக்கங்களின் அடிப்படையில் ஒன்றுபடுவோம் என அறைகூவி அழைக்கிறோம்.

தம்புள்ளையில் பள்ளிவாசல் மீது பௌத்த பயங்கரவாதம்ஏப் 21, 2012

தம்புள்ளையில் அமைந்துள்ள 60 வருடகால பழைமை வாய்ந்த ஹைரியா ஜும்ஆ பள்ளிவாசல் மீது 500இற்கும் மேற்பட்ட பௌத்த பிக்குகள் சிறீலங்கா காவல்துறையின்; முன்னிலையில் நேற்றுத் தாக்குதல் நடத்திக் கடும் சேதத்தை ஏற்படுத்தினர். பள்ளியில் ஜும் ஆ தொழுகைக்காக அமர்ந்திருந்தவர்களும் பலவந்தமாக வெளியேற்றப்பட்டனர். இதனால் அப்பள்ளியில் ஜும்ஆ தொழுகை ரத்தானதோடு தம்புள்ளையில் பெரும் பரபரப்பும் பதற்றமும் ஏற்பட்டன.

பள்ளிவாசலின் பாதுகாப்புக்காகக் குவிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த சிறீலங்கா காவல்துறையினருக்கு மேலதிகமாக 200 இராணுவத்தினர் சம்பவ இடத்துக்கு வரவழைக்கப்பட்டே நிலைமை ஓரளவு கட்டுப்பாட்டுக்குள் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டது.

பகல் 12 மணிமுதல் 2.30 மணிவரை நீடித்த இத்தாக்குதலால் பள்ளிவாசலுக்குக் கடும் சேதம் ஏற்பட்டது. பள்ளிவாசலைச் சூழ்ந்துநின்று பிக்குகள் கற்களாலும் கம்பு, தடிகளாலும் தாக்குதல் நடத்தினர் என்று பள்ளிவாசலில் அமர்ந்திருந்த பள்ளிவாசல் நிர்வாகிகள் கூறினர்.

இதனால் பள்ளிவாசலின் சுவர்கள் மற்றும் ஏனைய பொருட்களுக்கும் சேதம் ஏற்பட்டது என்று அவர்கள் மேலும் கூறினர். இதனால் தம்புள்ளை நகரில் கடும் பதற்றம் நிலவியது. தம்புள்ளை பஸாரில் உள்ள சிங்கள மற்றும் முஸ்லிம் வர்த்தகர்களுக்குச் சொந்தமான கடைகள் மூடப்பட்டு பஸார் வெறிச்சோடிக் காணப்பட்டது.

தம்புள்ளை புனித பூமிக்குள் இந்தப் பள்ளிவாசல் அமைந்துள்ளது என்று தெரிவித்து அதை அங்கிருந்து அகற்றிவிடுமாறு கோரியே பிக்குகள் இந்தத் தாக்குதலை நடத்தினர். தம்புள்ளை ரஜமகா விஹாரையின் பீடாதிபதி கினாமுலுவ சிறி சுமங்கலதேரரே இதற்குத் தலைமைதாங்கினார்.

அந்தப் பள்ளிவாசலை உடைக்கப்போவதாகப் பிக்குகள் நேற்றுமுன்தினமே அறிவித்திருந்தனர். ஜும்ஆ தொழுகை இடம்பெற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கும் போது ஊர்வலமாக வந்து இத்தாக்குதலை நடத்துவதென்று அவர்கள் திட்டமிட்டிருந்தனர். அவ்வாறே செய்தனர்.

இதன்போது உயிர்ச்சேதங்கள் ஏதும் ஏற்படக்கூடும் என்ற அச்சத்தில் அந்தப் பள்ளியில் ஜும்ஆ தொழுகையை நடத்தவேண்டாம் என்று மத்திய மாகாணப் பிரதிக் காவல்துறை அதிபர் பிரமுக பள்ளி நிர்வாகிகளிடம் கேட்டிருந்தார். தாம் தொழுகையை நிறுத்தமாட்டோம் என்று பள்ளிவாசல் நிர்வாகிகள் பிரமுகரிடம் தெரிவித்தனர்.

அதேவேளை, அமைச்சர் ஜனக பண்டார தென்னகோன் இப்பள்ளிவாசல் மீது தாக்குதல் நடத்தவேண்டாம் என்று பிக்குகளைக் கேட்டுக் கொண்டதோடு, வழமைபோல் தொழுகையை நடத்துமாறு பள்ளி நிர்வாகிகளிடம் கூறியிருந்தார்.

இந்த நிலையில், நேற்று அதிகாலை 3.30 மணியளவில் பள்ளிவாசலுக்கருகில் பெற்றோல் குண்டுத்தாக்குதல் ஒன்றும் நடத்தப்பட்டது என்று பள்ளிவாசல் நிர்வாகிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

இதனால் அதிகாலையில் இருந்து பதற்றம் ஆரம்பமானது. பள்ளிவாசலின் பாதுகாப்புக்காகப் சிறீலங்கா காவல்துறையின்;; நிறுத்தப்பட்டனர். அத்தோடு, பள்ளிவாசல் மீது மேற்கொள்ளப்படவிருக்கும் தாக்குதலைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்த நடவடிக்கை எடுக்குமாறு பள்ளிவாசல் நிர்வாகிகள் முஸ்லிம் அரசியல்வாதிகளிடமும், கொழும்பில் உள்ள முஸ்லிம் நாடுகளின் தூதுவர்களிடமும் மகஜர்கள் மூலம் வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்திருந்தனர்.

ஸ்ரீலங்கா சுதந்திரக்கட்சியின் மத்திய மாகாணசபை உறுப்பினர் ரிஸ்வி பாரூக் இந்த விடயத்தைப் பிரதமர் டி.எம்.ஜயரட்ணவின் கவனத்திற்குக் கொண்டுவந்த போது பள்ளிவாசல் மீது தாக்குதல் நடத்தும் சதித்திட்டம் முறியடிக்கப்படும் என்றும், பள்ளிவாசலுக்கு முழுமையான பாதுகாப்பு வழங்கப்படும் என்றும் பிரதமர் கூறியிருந்தார்.

அதேபோல், முஸ்லிம் அரசியல்வாதிகளும் இந்த விடயத்தை மகிந்தவின் கவனத்திற்குக் கொண்டுவந்து தாக்குதல் நடவடிக்கையை முறியடிக்கப்போவதாகப் பள்ளி நிர்வாகிகளிடம் வாக்குறுதியளித்தனர்.

இவ்வாறு பள்ளியைப் பாதுகாக்கப்போவதாகப் பலரும் வாக்குறுதி வழங்கிய நிலையில்தான் பிக்குகள் சிறீலங்கா காவல்துறையின்;; முன்னிலையில் தாக்குதல் நடத்தினர்.
கொழும்பில் பல சந்தர்ப்பங்களில் ஆர்ப்பாட்டங்களை நடத்திய பிக்குகள் மீது பல தடவைகள் கண்ணீர் புகைக்குண்டுத்தாக்குதல் நடத்தி அவர்களை விரட்டிய சிறீலங்கா காவல்துறையினரால் ஏன் இந்தப் பிக்குகளை விரட்ட முடியவில்லை என்று பள்ளிவாசல் நிர்வாகிகள் கேள்வி எழுப்பியுள்ளனர்.

12 முதல் 2.30 மணிவரை பிக்குகளின் கட்டுப்பாட்டின் கீழேயே பள்ளிவாசல் இருந்தது என்றும் 2.30 மணிக்குப் பின்னர் சிறீலங்கா இராணுவத்தினர் வந்தே பள்ளிவாசலை அவர்களிடமிருந்து மீட்டெடுத்தனர் என்றும் பள்ளிவாசல் நிர்வாகிகள் கூறினர்.

இந்த மாதம் 23 ஆம் திகதிவரை எவரும் பள்ளிவாசலுக்குள் நுழையக்கூடாது என்று சிறீலங்கா இராணுவத்தினர் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர் என்று பள்ளிவாசல் நிர்வாகிகள் மேலும் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

தம்புள்ள பிரதேசத்தில் 65 ஆண்டுகளாக இயங்கி வந்த முஸ்லிம்களின் பள்ளிவாசலை அங்கிருந்து அகற்றுமாறு சிறிலங்கா பிரதமர் டி.எம். ஜெயரட்ண உத்தரவிட்டதன் பின்னணியில் நேற்று இந்தக் கூட்டம் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது.

சிறிலங்கா பிரதமர் வசம் உள்ள புத்த சாசன அமைச்சின் ஏற்பாட்டில், அந்த அமைச்சின் செயலர், மாவட்ட அரசாங்க அதிபர், பிரதேச செயலர் மற்றும் தம்புள்ள ரஜமகா விகாரையின் தலைமைக்குரு இனாமலுவே சுமங்கல தேரர் உள்ளிட்ட பலரும் இந்த கூட்டத்தில் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

இந்தக் கலந்துரையாடலில் அஸ்கிரிய பீடாதிபதியும் கலந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்.

அதேவேளை, புனிதப் பிரதேசத்துக்கு வெளியே எந்த மதச் சின்னங்களையும் அமைப்பதற்கும் இந்தக் கூட்டத்தில் அனுமதி அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

நேற்றைய கூட்டத்தில் எந்தவொரு முஸ்லிம் பிரதிநிதிகளும் பங்கேற்கவில்லை என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

A mosque in Sri Lanka has been forced to abandon Friday prayers

amid community tensions in the central town of Dambulla.

About 2,000 Buddhists, including monks, marched to the mosque

and held a demonstration demanding its demolition.

A mosque official told the BBC he and several dozen companions

were trapped inside and feared the crowd would destroy the

building.

Overnight the mosque had been targeted by a fire-bombing - no-

one was hurt.

The BBC's Charles Haviland in Colombo says the tensions have

been growing in the neighbourhood.

Shortly after the protest the mosque was evacuated and its

Friday prayers cancelled.

Many Buddhists regard Dambulla as a sacred town and in recent

months there had been other sectarian tensions in this part of

Sri Lanka, our correspondent says.

Last September a monk led a crowd to demolish a Muslim shrine

in Anuradhapura, not far from Dambulla.

Buddhism is the religion of the majority of the population in

Sri Lanka.

To the masses of the Palestinian people, and all of your forces, organizations and institutions-

We greet you and your revolutionary steadfastness, which is bound to achieve a triumphant victory despite the long night of the hateful occupation.

In light of the urgent need to confront the Israeli Prison Services and their ongoing and escalating inhuman practices, and to escalate the prisoners’ struggle, and after lengthy and in-depth dialogue among the prisoners’ movement for over two years, a united national position including the majority of the sectors and forces of the prisoners’ movement has come forward to fight the battle of the empty intestines – the battle of the prisoners’ spring. This battle comes amid a spirit of defiance and steadfastness among the prisoners, and determination to confront solitary confinement, the denial of visits to prisoners from Gaza, demand the abolition of the “Shalit law,” demand the right to education, and the restoration of prisoners’ rights that have been trampled on in recent years.

We call upon all of our comrades throughout the prisons to be at high readiness and great pride to fight this battle. Despite the passage of less than six months after our last battle for freedom, demanding an end to solitary confinement and isolation, we are committed to this great struggle. Comrade Ahed Abu Ghoulmeh will be our representative in the Higher National Leadership Committee to coordinat and lead the strike.

We also call upon the masses of the Palestinian people everywhere they are, upon our national and Islamic institutions, upon the Arab nation and upon all progressive forces around the world to take up and engage with the struggle of the prisoners who need your support and action.

PFLP calls for broad national movement in support of the prisoners’ struggle for freedom and dignity

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine called for the broadest national action to support the prisoners’ movement, their strike and their goals, which begins on April 17, Palestinian Prisoners’ Day. The Front called upon Palestinians in Palestine and all areas of exile and diaspora, and for all official and popular institutions to plan to engage effectively – as the struggle of the prisoners is the struggle of the whole Palestinian people. The Front said that the prisoners are the vanguard of the Palestinian people, inside the camps and prisons of the occupation, and are key to ending the occupation, racism, colonialism, and achieving the rights of our people to liberation, self-determination, and return.

The Front called for the urgent formation of a national committee involving all Palestinian forces to support the document approved by the prisoners’ representatives from all political forces in the prisons, and to develop a comprehensive national strategy to engage on Palestinian, Arab and international levels to confront the occupation internationally for its violations of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, to hold it accountable for its war crimes, racism and apartheid nature.

The Front noted that it is important to refer back to the principle – and the UN resolution – that Zionism is a form of racism – and demand the UN and its institutions fulfil their responsibilities to act for the Palestinian people and prisoners to enable our people to achieve our freedom, sovereignty, self-determination and return.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine said on Palestinian Prisoners’ Day, that the policies and practices of the occupation – of racism, oppression, military and settler police and their courts, of the military and its legal system – against thousands of prisoners, men and women, children and elders, and against the land and the people, are war crimes and state terrorism. These are organized and systematic attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause and deny the Palestinian people’s right to freedom, to return, to independence and self-determination, as are shared by all other peoples of the earth.

The PFLP greeted the Palestinian prisoners with appreciation and pride, freedom and dignity on Palestinian Prisoners’ Day. It saluted the Palestinian and Arab prisoners, young and old, men and women, those with long sentences, the members of the Legislative Council and the leaders of our people, led by Comrade Ahmad Sa’adat, general secretary of the Popular Front; Marwan Barghouti, member of the Central Committee of Fateh; and our brother Aziz Dweik, sopeaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council. The Front also greeted with pride and gratitude the families of the prisoners and the martyrs, saluting their steadfastness, commitment and pride, emphasizing that it is a national duty to protect and provide for their moral, legal, political and material needs and to fulfil the steadfastness and mountainous sacrifices provided by our imprisoned people.

The PFLP said that the movement of prisoners, despite the brutality of the occupation and its fascist wardens, stands as a model of unity, resilience, struggle and innovation, saluting their experience of struggle and their battle of the empty stomachs, saying that the will of the prisoners is stronger than the whip of the occupation and that all of the prisons of the occupation will come crashing down. The PFLP affirmed that the prisoners’ movement will bring to an end isolation cells, solitary confinement, administrative detention, kidnapping, murder and deportation and will play a central role in ending occupation and colonization throughout Palestine.

The Front called upon the Palestinian people and all of its forces to support the struggle of the prisoners, emphasizing the great importance of integrating all forms of national struggle and including the issue of the freedom of the prisoners as a constant of the Palestinian national cause. It said that this is a component of the national struggle for liberation, return and self-determination, and necessary to strengthen the Palestinian, Arab and international official and popular struggle for legal, human, moral and funamental rights. It emphasized that Palestinian prisoners are prisoners of war, because of their struggle for freedom, and that the occupation must be compelled to comply with international humanitarian law and the Geneva Convention. The Front noted that the international community is nearly mute on the issues of Palestinian prisoners, saying that the occupation and its leaders should be brought before international tribunals to be held accountable for their crimes, and that the occupation state must be internationally delegitimized and isolated as was apartheid South Africa.

The Front praised international popular action to support prisoners, and called upon parliaments of the world to advocate for the release of members of the Palestinian Legislative Council and all Palestinian prisoners, urging the expulsion of the Knesset, the parliament of the occupation state, from the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The Front called for the Human Rights Council to send an international committee to examine the damages caused by settlements, occupation and aggression and called upon all international authorities to reject the International Criminal Court’s decision to not consider the crimes of the occupation.

The Front called on Prisoners’ Day for popular resistance and diverse struggle everywhere, challenging the occupation and the jailer inside the prison cells and outside the front doors of the jails, calling for broad participation in the rally in front of the Ofer Prison at 1pm on April 17, Palestinian Prisoners’ Day.

Economist magazine - "Skintland" cover - is "an insult".

Scotland's Deputy First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, tells Channel 4 News the latest edition of the Economist magazine - which features a spoof "Skintland" cover - is "an insult".

The magazine's lead article warns the Scots they will become one of "Europe's most vulnerable, marginal economies" if they vote for independence in the 2014 referendum.

It warns that Scotland's North Sea oil will start to dry up in the next decade, its borrowing costs will be much higher, and entry to the European Union will not be automatic.

"After the banking and eurozone crises, Scotland would be far more vulnerable to shocks as a nation of five million people than as part of a diversified economy of 62 million."

"There is an irony here: to preserve a distinctively open-handed Scottish social model, staying in the Union might be the safest choice."

The spoof map labels the Grampians the Grumpians, the Lowlands as the Loanlands and Elgin as Hellgin.

An 'insult'

Alex Salmond, First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party, said: "It just insults every single community in Scotland.

"This doesn't represent England. Goodness sake, I wouldn't insult the people of England the way The Economist believes it should insult the communities of Scotland.

"This is a particular strata of London society.

"It's not a very attractive strata. They're not even funny. If it was a decent joke we'd have a laugh at it. This is just plain insults."

Tom Devine – Senior Research Professor in History at University of Edinburgh said:

"The piece in The Economist is a totally predictable kind of thing that can be heard from time to time at middle class dinner parties or in the letters pages of the Daily Telegraph.

"If we take away the south east of England and the overblown economy in London, in relation to the rest of the UK then Scotland is doing rather well.

As the deadline to the UNP–TNA May Day rally gets closer, the TNA appears to be splitting with the eastern sector of the party pulling out from the main event scheduled in Jaffna, well
informed TNA sources disclose.

 Hence, the main opposition UNP now appears to trek on a course of derailment with a section of the TNA refusing to join the UNP on May 01.
 
Batticaloa district TNA parliamentarian P. Ariyanenthiran said he and his parliamentary colleagues in the East would not join the TNA–UNP rally in Jaffna but would participate at a separate
May Day Rally in Batticaloa. “We will also have similar rallies in Vavuniya and Kilinochchi,” Ariyanenthiran said.

 Meanwhile, TNA spokesman and Jaffna district MP Suresh Premachandran, who was earlier non committal of his participation in the Jaffna Rally, told The Nation he would abide by the party decision and be present at the Jaffna rally.

 UNP deputy leader Sajith Premadasa, who would be busy on May Day with his father’s death anniversary events in Colombo, claimed that his absence in Jaffna on that day has been accepted by the party as he never did attend UNP rallies outside Colombo on May Day in the past. “I have to give
precedence to the death anniversary events of my father and the party has accepted that position,” Premadasa asserted.

 Democratic People’s Front leader and former parliamentarian Mano Ganeshan, who plays a key role in organizing a joint UNP- TNA rally in Jaffna on May Day, said the move was to integrate the Tamil people with the mainstream of politics of the country.
 
 UNP stalwart and former deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya was not available for comment yesterday, and his aides claimed Jayasuriya was out of the country.

 The joint UNP-TNA rally is backed by the Democratic People’s Front, the Nava Samasamaja Party and the United Socialist Party.
