Biden says Israel has agreed to ‘enduring’ Gaza ceasefire proposal
US president’s announcement comes as he faces widespread criticism over his Gaza policy in lead-up to November election.
Israel has agreed to a proposal that would lead to a “lasting” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, US President Joe Biden has announced, as he faces mounting pressure and criticism over his support for the Israeli war effort.
During a news conference at the White House on Friday afternoon, Biden said Israel has put forward “a comprehensive new proposal” to end the war.

Hamas, PIJ send ceasefire response to mediators
- Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad say in joint statement that they have submitted a response to a ceasefire proposal to mediators.
- Calling the conditions in Gaza “deplorable”, UN chief Antonio Guterres tells Israel and Hamas to come to an agreement on a ceasefire proposal outlined late last month by the US.
- Israeli attacks have killed 40 Palestinians and wounded 120 in the latest 24-hour casualty reporting period, Gaza’s Health Ministry reports.
- Hamas has agreed to a ceasefire resolution adopted by the UN Security Council, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri tells the Reuters news agency.
- At least 37,164 people have been killed and 84,832 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll in Israel from Hamas’s attacks stands at 1,139 with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.
Important that both Hamas, Islamic Jihad on board for ceasefire
Also, they are dealing with the United States … which has been aiding and abating genocide while at the same time trying to broker a ceasefire.
So you can’t blame Hamas for not trusting the Biden administration to broker a ceasefire. It is important the Palestine Islamic Jihad is on board as well, because this means that the two main fighting groups in Gaza are both now engaged with the various parties in order to move the process forward.
The need for clarifications about the full withdrawal from Gaza, including the Gaza crossings, is essential for Hamas. Otherwise, you could expect Israel to be imposing a siege any day by simply closing those crossings or by redeploying its troops.
So I think these guarantees are essential, and I think the United States, as a sponsor of this proposal, is going to have to give them⍐.
