The External Affairs Ministry informed all the diplomatic missions based in Colombo today that
Kumar Gunaratnam was deported from Sri Lanka because his stay in the country was in breach of
immigration laws.

 Issuing statement, the Ministry said Mr. Gunaratnam had now re-appeared and had in fact been
deported from Sri Lanka because his stay in this country was in breach of Sri Lanka’s
Immigration laws and therefore illegal.

Following is the letter sent to the diplomatic missions in Sri Lanka:

The Ministry wishes to emphasize to the diplomatic community the following aspects of the
situation:

It appears that Mr. Premkumar Gunaratnam has changed his name three times.  The first name,
Wanninayake Mudiyanselage Daskon, appears in his marriage certificate.  A different name,
Rathnayake Mudiyanselage Dayalal, is used in the passport which he obtained from this country. 
Yet another name, Noel Mudalige,  was used when he obtained the Australian passport which he
produced on his arrival in Sri Lanka on 4th September 2011.

(a) Other circumstances relating to his previous history, which are clearly relevant in
assessing the credibility of his statements, will be communicated to the Australian High
Commission in Colombo.  These are circumstances which have come to light in the course of
detailed interrogation by the Police, who have questioned Mr. Gunaratnam and members of his
family.

(b) There are many features relating to the alleged abduction which throw considerable doubt on
the reliability and trustworthiness of the version of the events which have been released to the
media.  For example, the abduction of Mr. Gunaratnam is alleged to have occurred at 4.00 a.m. on
7th April 2012.  A complaint to the Police in this regard was made only at 4.10 p.m. in the
afternoon.  There was a lapse of 12 hours.

(c) With regard to Ms. Dimuthu Attygalle, the abduction was alleged to have taken place at 8.00
p.m. on 6th April 2012.  However, the complaint with regard to this matter was made to the
Police only at 3.35 p.m. on the following day, 7th April 2012.  The interval was therefore
almost a full day.  It is quite obvious that a genuine abduction would have been reported to the
Police far more swiftly.

(d) The story of Mr. Gunaratnam stands entirely on its own without corroboration in any manner
whatsoever.  It suffers from a series of infirmities which significantly detract from its
credibility.  For example, although there is clear evidence that elaborate arrangements were
made by his political group in respect of his security, which had been entrusted in particular
to a definite person, it is claimed that at the time of the alleged abduction, he was occupying
a room in the upstair portion of a partly constructed house, which had not been inhabited for a
long period.

(e) Mr. Gunaratnam’s wife who made several public statements about his alleged abduction, had
stated categorically to the Police that she had not lived with her husband since 7th November
2006 and had no knowledge of his whereabouts.

(f) It is quite clear that Mr. Gunaratnam was staying in this country illegally for more than 5
months.  His visa had expired 5 months ago.

(g) It is evident even at a glance that there are significant discrepancies between the versions
of Mr. Gunaratnam and Ms. Attygalle.

The Ministry of External Affairs wishes to state that, while the Government is responsive to
constructive criticism, it is important that allegations of a volatile nature should be based on
facts properly ascertained and objectively assessed.  Whenever a person chooses to withdraw from
the community for personal reasons, or with the deliberate intention of causing embarrassment to
the Government, it is grossly unfair to arrive at the conclusion that there has been an
abduction and to point a finger at the State.  This has happened on many occasions and now seems
to reflect a recurring pattern.  The objective of this is clearly to target Sri Lanka in
international fora on the flimsiest of evidence.  What is lacking by way of evidence seems to be
amply compensated by emotion, surmise and invective.  The Government asks nothing more than that objectivity and basic fairness should be the criteria governing reactions to these irresponsible
and malicious campaigns.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine stated on April 9, 2012 that it will not participate in any way in a new or rearranged Palestinian Authority government under Salam Fayyad. The Front said that any such configuration laks legitimacy, has not been given confidence by the Legislative Council nor does it enjoy a national consensus of national and Islamic forces.

The Front said that any such attempt would only be an obstacle in the path of meaningful national unity and reconciliation and only exacerbate the national crisis. The Front once again reiterated that the Palestinian Authority must cease all forms of security coordination with the occupation. It said that the governments of the status quo – whether in Gaza or Ramallah – are not sufficient to confront the dangers to the Palestinian people, their land and cause, and urged national unity to confront the occupation and its plans to confiscate Palestinian land and liquidate Palestinian rights.

மன்னார், திருக் கேதீஸ்வரம் பாலாவி தீர்த்தக் கரைக்குச் சமீபமாக தனியார் காணி ஒன்றில் போயா தினமான  கடந்த வெள்ளிக்கிழமை வெண்கலத்திலான புத்தர் சிலை திடீரென கொண்டு வரப்பட்டு "பிரித்" ஓதி வழி பாட்டுக்குத் திறந்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஏற்கனவே குறித்த பகுதியில் நிலைகொண்டுள்ள படையினர் தனியார் காணியில் சிறிய புத்தர் சிலை ஒன்றை வைத்து வழிபட்டு வந்துள்ளனர்.ஆனால் தற்போது திடீரென மேற்படி வெண்கலத்திலான சிலை கொண்டுவரப்பட்டு அங்கு வழிபாட்டுத் தலமும் நிர்மாணிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. சுமார் ஆயிரத்து 500 கிலோ கொண்ட இந்த புத்தர் சிலை வைக்கப்பட்டமை மன்னார் மாவட்ட இந்து மற்றும் கிறிஸ்தவ மக்கள் மத்தியில் அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. திருக்கேதீஸ்வரத்தின் தீர்த்தக் கரையான பாலாவிக்குச் சமீபமாக, இந்த பௌத்த வழிபாட்டுத் தலம் நிர்மாணிக் கப்பட்டுள்ளதால் இந்துக்கள் மத்தியில் அச்ச உணர்வும் பீதியும் காணப்படுகிறது.

இந்தப் பகுதியில் பௌத்த மக்கள் எவரும் வசிக்காத நிலையில், தனியார் காணியை அபகரித்து பௌத்த தலம் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளமை திருக்கேதீச்சரம் தனித்து இந்து மத வழிபாட்டிடமாக இருப்பதை மாசுபடுத்துவதற்கான திட்டமிட்ட நடவடிக்கை என்று பிரதேச இந்து, கிறிஸ்தவ மக்கள் சந்தேகம் எழுப்பியுள்ளனர்.

புதிதாக மத வழிபாட்டுத்தலங்கள் அமைப்பதற்கு பிரதேச செயலகம் மற்றும் கலாசார, மத விவகாரங்கள் அமைச்சின் அனுமதி பெறப்பட வேண்டும். ஆனால் இந்த நடைமுறை ஏதும் கைக்கொள்ளப்படாமல் படையினர் மேற்கொண்டுள்ள நடவடிக்கை கண்டிக்கத்தக்கது என்றும் சைவப் பெரியார்கள் கண்டனம் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

Comrade Maher al-Taher, member of the Political Bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and leader of its branch in exile, said on April 2 that the Palestinian people, through their actions on Land Day, reaffirmed their eternal commitment to the homeland of Palestine, in Haifa, Yafa, Akka, Nazareth, Lid and every inch of the land of Palestine.

In an interview with the Voice of the People radio station, Dr. Taher said that “On this day, many martyrs have fallen, who sought to send their message to the world: that this land is the land of the Palestinian people, that the Zionist invaders will not be able to continue their occupation. Since that date in 1976, this day has been marked by the people of Palestine throughout ’48, in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Jerusalem, and the countries of refuge, exile and diaspora, emphasizing the goals of our people and our unity in every place, and the unity of the land of Palestine, in the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem, and the occupied lands of ’48.”

Comrade Taher stressed that Palestine cannot be fragmented, and saluted the Palestinian people on the land occupied in 1948, saying “You have remained on the land, asserted your eternal connection to the land and our dear and beloved homeland. We will continue the struggle and resistance to liberate every part of the land of Palestine.”

Taher said that Palestinian unity is critical, saying “enough is enough – enough of managing the division. It is time to make a radical and genuine move to restore the PLO and rebuild the Palestinian house. The continuation of this situation cannot be accepted by the Palestinian people in any way.” He emphasized the importance of struggle and resistance, saying that the so-called “peace process” is a proven failure in the presence of an enemy that seeks total domination of the land. It is clear, said Taher, that there is only one option in front of our people – to continue steadfastness and resistance.

He praised the solidarity activities on Land Day around the world, saying that these activities were not only taking place in the countries surrounding Palestine, but in all Palestinian communties around the world, in Europe and the Americas, saying that the Land Day actions were part of comprehensive popular and media movements and actions, and that this day had beome a major day of action in the Arab world, to assert the unity of Palestinian land, express solidarity, and stand by the Palestinian people as they continue their struggle for the liberation of their homeland, adding that the Arab capitals will see many activities on Land Day and moving forward for Palestine.

DUBAI—The U.S. Navy said Monday it has deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf
region amid rising tensions with Iran over its nuclear program.

The deployment of the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise along with the Abraham Lincoln carrier
strike group marks only the fourth time in the past decade that the Navy has had two aircraft
carriers operating at the same time in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, said Cmdr. Amy
Derrick-Frost of the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet.

The two carriers will support the American military operations in Afghanistan and antipiracy efforts off Somalia's coast and in the Gulf of Aden, Cmdr. Derrick-Frost said.
The warships also patrol the Gulf's strategic oil routes that Iran has threatened to shut down
in retaliation for economic sanctions.

The deployment of the second aircraft carrier is "routine and not specific to any threat," Cmdr.
Derrick-Frost added. She didn't say how long the Navy will keep the increased military presence
in region.

It was in June 2010 that the U.S. last had two carriers operating in the region. Before then,
the carriers were deployed in March 2003 during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and in February
2007 in support of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Enterprise is based in Norfolk, Va. It is the Navy's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier
that is now on its last mission.

The Enterprise was commissioned in November 1961. The carrier is scheduled to be deactivated
this fall.

UNHRC resolution is merely a note of caution made by concerned friends who are genuinely worried about the self-destructive direction Sri Lanka is taking.

The resolution in Geneva must be understood in the spirit in which it was presented. The key sponsors of the resolution are all long standing friends of our country and many of them in addition to being important economic and trading partners, helped Sri Lanka in its fight against terrorism. The US, not only proscribed the LTTE, but also played a key role in curbing their fund raising while a special 'Contact group' was formed to monitor and curtail arms procurement in SE Asia. The UK and the EU also dealt a severe blow to the LTTE by proscribing it and coming down heavily on their fund raising activities while continuing to provide Sri Lankan exports with an important market. India, who voted with the resolution, has been a great friend throughout and as Kadirgamar once said our friendship has reached a state of 'irreversible excellence'. Rather than hurl vitriolic abuse at them, the government, even at this stage must realize that the UNHRC resolution is merely a note of caution made by concerned friends who are genuinely worried about the self-destructive direction Sri Lanka is taking.
 
 Perhaps, this is an appropriate moment for introspection and some soul searching by the Rajapaksa regime. Even now, it Is not too late for the Government to admit that it is the short sighted policies and its anti democratic tendencies which paved the way for this resolution and its resounding victory at the UNHRC.
 
 However, it is still not too late to turn a new page and start afresh in a new direction.
 
 The Rajapaksa regime is now at the cross- roads. By continuing on the same old path, they can turn Sri Lanka into the 'new Burma' of Asia - a rogue regime shunned and sidelined or they can choose a new direction which will transform Sri Lanka into a vibrant  multi ethnic, multi-cultural democracy which can deliver the bright and prosperous future our people surely deserve.
 
 Dhammashoka or Mugabe?  The choice is yours, Mr. President.
