Sri Lanka's ex-army chief begins jail sentence

Sri Lanka's ex-army chief Sarath Fonseka, who led troops to victory over Tamil rebels to end a decades-long civil war, on Thursday began 30 months in jail after the president
confirmed the sentence.
Troops escorted the former four-star general to the island's main Welikada prison, hours after the government announced that President Mahinda Rajapakse had approved Fonseka's conviction by a military court.
"He was taken from military custody and handed over to prison authorities to start his sentence," an army officer said.
Fonseka fell out with Rajapakse over who should take credit for defeating the Tamil Tigers in May last year and unsuccessfully tried to unseat him in a January election.
Fonseka was found guilty at a court martial on four counts of making irregular purchases for the military when he was its commander at the height of fighting in the island's northeast.
Rajapakse approved the sentence of two-and-a-half years "rigorous imprisonment" on Wednesday after returning from addressing the United Nations in New York, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.
"The president, as commander-in-chief, has confirmed the court martial decision," Rambukwella told reporters. "The sentence begins from today."
A senior official who declined to be named said Fonseka could appeal to a civilian court and could also seek bail pending a hearing.
"The court martial recommended up to three years in jail, but the president has decided he will be in prison for 30 months," the official said.
Fonseka's Democratic National Alliance (DNA) party said they would appeal the sentence and accused Rajapakse of leading a political vendetta.
"It is not the court martial which is responsible for jailing General Fonseka," DNA lawmaker Tiran Alles told AFP. "It is the president who today jailed his main political opponent."
Alles said Rajapakse had ordered the imprisonment of Fonseka despite requests from the island's influential Buddhist clergy as well as other religious leaders.
Fonseka was hailed as a hero after soldiers under his command crushed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) last year. Tamil separatist leaders were killed while pinned down on the coast after a massive military offensive.
The Tigers' defeat ended nearly 40 years of separatist conflict in Sri Lanka, but rights groups say thousands of civilians were also killed in the final onslaught and that Tamils remain badly discriminated against.
The conviction of Fonseka on September 17 came after he was stripped of his rank and pension following another court martial that found him guilty last month of dabbling in politics while in uniform.
Fonseka was arrested two weeks after his defeat in the elections and has remained in military custody since. However, he won a seat in parliamentary elections in April, allowing him to attend the legislature.
The ex-army chief has said the government is seeking revenge for his decision to stand against the president and wants to keep him from speaking in parliament, which is controlled by Rajapakse loyalists.
"The court martial was just a puppet show with the government holding the strings," his wife Anoma told reporters in Colombo Thursday. "We knew that he will be jailed so this announcement from the government today does not come as a surprise to us."
Fonseka also faces civilian charges of employing army deserters and revealing state secrets -- offences that carry a 20-year jail term.
He has angered the government by publicly declaring that he was ready to go before any international tribunal to answer charges of alleged war crimes while crushing the Tamil Tigers.
The United Nations estimates that at least 7,000 ethnic Tamil civilians were killed in the final months of fighting between government troops and the Tamil Tigers, but Colombo has said no civilians were killed and refused to allow any independent probe.

Thursday around 10:30 p.m to serve his 30 months’ rigorous imprisonment following the ratification of the recommendation of the Second Court Martial. Sri Lanka President’s ratification endorsed that Fonseka should serve thirty months in prison and not 36 months as recommended by the Second Court Martial for violating tender procedures in purchasing arms to the Sri Lanka Army.
Fonseka is being held separately in the prison and not with other prisoners, prison sources said.
Fonseka was brought to Welikada prison from the Navy Headquarters where he was kept in detention since February 8.
The transfer took place after photographers and television video crews ended a 12-hour watch outside the prison complex located adjoining the Baseline road, Borella expecting Fonseka’s arrival.
However, the media personnel left the place following heavy rainfall.

லண்டனில் திலீபன் நினைவு வணக்க நிகழ்வு

லண்டனில் நடைபெற்ற தியாக தீபம் திலீபனின் நினைவுவணக்க நிகழ்வில் பெருந்திரளான மக்கள் உணர்வுபூர்வமாக கலந்துகொண்டிருந்தனர்.

நேற்று (26-09-2010) மாலை 6:00 மணிக்கு ஆரம்பமான நிகழ்வு இரவு 9:30 மணிவரை மண்டபம் நிறைந்த மக்களுடன் மிகவும் உணர்வுபூர்வமாக ...முன்னெடுக்கப்பட்டது.

நிகழ்வில் முதலாவதாக மாவீரர்களான ரகு (சுப்பிரமணியம் சிவரூபன்), குகன் (சுப்பிரமணியம் சிவகாந்தன்) ஆகியோரின் சகோதரி தவமலர் அவர்கள் ஈகைச்சுடரினை ஏற்றிவைத்து தியாகதீபம் திலீபனின் திருவுருவப்படத்திற்கு மலர்மாலை அணிவித்தார்.
அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து கேணல் சங்கர், கேணல் ராயூ ஆகியோரின் திருவுருவப்படத்திற்கு மாவீரர் சஜீவனா அவர்களின் சகோதரர் மதீஸ்வரன் அவர்கள் மலர்மாலையினை அணிவித்தார்.
மற்றுமோர் இந்திய சதியாலும், துரோகத்தாலும் சிக்குண்டு அவர்களின் திட்டம் நிறைவேறாமல் தாமே நஞ்சருந்தி வீரகாவியமான லெப்.கேணல் குமரப்பா, லெப்.கேணல் புலேந்திரன் உட்பட்ட பத்து வேங்கைகளின் நினைவாக வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த திருவுருவப் படத்திற்கு மாவீரர் நிதி (தில்லையம்பலம் சிவசிகாமணி) அவர்களின் சகோதரர் தி.சிகாமணி அவர்கள் மலர்மாலையை அணிவித்தார்.
அதனைத் தொடர்ந்து தாயக விடுதலைப் போரில் இதுவரை காலமும் உயிர் நீத்த மாவீரர்களுக்கும், தாயகத்தில் அநியாயமாக படுகொலை செய்யப்பட்ட மக்களுக்காகவும் அகவணக்கம் செலுத்தப்பட்டது.
அகவணக்கத்தினை தொடர்ந்து மக்களினால் மலர்வணக்க நிகழ்வு இடம்பெற்றது.

மக்கள் புரட்சி வெடிக்கட்டும் என கூறிய திலீபனின் நிகழ்வில் மண்டபம் நிறைந்து பல நூற்றுக்கணக்கில் மக்கள் திரண்டு மலர்வணக்க நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்டமையானது அவரது கோரிக்கையை நிறைவேற்றுவது போன்றும், தொடர்ந்து வீறுகொண்ட மக்களாக விடுதலைப் போருக்கு தயாராக உறுதியோடு இருப்பதையே காட்டுவதாக இருந்தது.

தியாக தீபம் திலீபன் உட்பட செப்ரம்பர் மாதத்தில் வீரமரணத்தை தழுவிய அனைத்து மாவீரர்களையும் நினைவுகூர்ந்து நடாத்தப்பட்ட இந்த நினைவுவணக்க நிகழ்வில் கடந்த 23 ஆம் திகதியன்று பிரித்தானியாவின் லிவர்பூல் பகுதியில் இருந்து மூன்று அம்ச கோரிக்கைகளை முன்வைத்து துவிச்சக்கர வண்டியூடான விழிப்புணர்வு பரப்புரையை மேற்கொண்ட திரு. சிவசுப்பிரமணியம் யோகேஸ்வரன் அவர்கள் இன்றைய தினம் மாலை 7:45 மணியளவில் நிறைவு செய்து அங்கே தனது மலர்வணக்கதையும் திலீபனுக்கு செலுத்தியிருந்தமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

தேசியத்தலைவன் பிரபாகரன் உருவாகினான், காரணம் மனிதநேயம். நாம் பிறருக்காக செய்வதும், வாழ்வதும் தான் ஆன்மீகம். அதைத்தான் தலைவர் பிரபாகரனும் செய்தார். திலீபனும் செய்தான், மாவீரர்கள் அத்தனைபேரும் செய்தார்கள். வெல்பவன் தான் சரித்திரத்தை எழுதுபவன். இன்றைக்கு எமது சரித்திரம் மறைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது என்றால் நாம் வெல்லவேண்டும். அதற்கு தான் தலைவனும் முயன்றான். எமக்கான வெற்றி என்பது பின்போவதற்கு காரணம் எம்முள் அதிகளவானோர் பயந்தவர்களாகவும், காட்டிக்கொடுப்போராகவும் இருப்பதனால் தான்.

இன்றுவரை வீரகாவியமான மாவீரர்களுக்குள் எத்தனைபேருக்கு வாரிசுகள் உண்டு. அதிகமானோருக்கு இல்லை. ஏனென்றால் ஆற்றல் மிக்கவனும், துணிந்தவர்களுமாக உள்ள இளவயதினர் எல்லோரும் மண்ணுக்காகவும், மக்களுக்காகவும் போராடி வீழ்ந்துபோனார்கள். மீதமுள்ள பயந்தவர்களும், காட்டிக்கொடுப்போருமே அதிகளவில் எஞ்சியிருக்கிறோம்.

எமக்கு நாமே எதிரியாக இருக்கிறோம். எனவே நாம் ஒன்றுபட்டு நிற்கவேண்டும். அவ்வாறு செயற்பட்டாலே நாம் எமக்கான விடுதலையை வென்றேடுக்க முடியும். எம்மால் ஆன அதிகூடிய பணியை எமது மண்ணினதும், மக்களினதும் விடிவிற்காக செய்யவேண்டும், திரு.யோகேஸ்வரன் போன்று உங்களால் முடிந்த மனித நேய செயற்பாடுகளில் அனைவரும் பங்கெடுக்கவேண்டும் எனக் கூறினார்.

திரு.லோகேஸ்வரன் அவர்கள் உரையாற்றுகையில்.....

தான் நேசித்த தமிழ் மக்கள் விடுதலைபெற்று நிம்மதியாகவும், சுதந்திரமாகவும் வாழ்வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக தன்னை வருத்தி தியாகம் செய்த அந்த அற்புத மனிதன் திலீபனின் நினைவு நாளில் நாம் அவரைபோல் இல்லாவிடினும் எம்மால் ஆனவற்றை எம்மக்களுக்காகவும், மக்களின் விடுதலை நோக்கியும் செய்யவேண்டும். அதில் முதலாவதாக எனது கோரிக்கைகளில் ஒன்றான
1) எமக்குள் உள்ள கருத்து வேறுபாடுகளை களைந்து, பிளவுகள் இன்றி அனைவரும் ஒன்றுசேர்ந்து தாயக விடுதலை நோக்கிய பாதையில் செல்லவேண்டும்.

2) தடுப்பு முகாம்கள் மற்றும், வதை முகாம்களில் சொல்லொணா துயரை அனுபவித்துவரும் மக்களும், போராளிகளும் விடுதலை செய்யப்பட சர்வதேசங்கள் ஆவன செய்யவேண்டும்.

3) தாயகத்தில் எமது மாவீரர்களின் கல்லறைகளும், நினைவாலயங்களும் சிதைக்கப்பட்டும், அழிக்கப்பட்டும் வரும் இவ்வேளையில் புலம்பெயர் தேசங்களில் வாழும் நாம் எமக்காக ஆலயங்களை அமைத்து வழிபாடு செய்துவருவது போன்று அந்த ஆலயங்களில் எமது மாவீரர்களை நினைவுகூரும் நினைவு சின்னங்கள் வைக்கப்பட்டு அனைத்துப் பகுதிகளிலும் மக்கள் மாவீரர்களை நினைந்து வழிபாடு செய்வதற்கு வகை செய்யவேண்டும்.

உலகிலேயே முதன் முதலாக லண்டன் ரூட்டிங் அம்மன் ஆலயத்தில் அவ்வாறான ஒரு நினைவாலயம் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதனை முன்மாதிரியாக கொண்டு அதுபோன்ற நினைவாலயங்கள் புலம்பெயர் மக்கள் வாழும் அனைத்து பகுதிகளிலும் அமைக்கப்படவேண்டும். என்று கூறினார்.

திரு.ஜெயானந்தமூர்த்தி அவர்கள் குறிப்பிடுகையில்....

ஆயுதம் மெளனிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் தமிழர்களின் விடுதலைப் போராட்டம் என்பது எந்த ஒரு காலத்திலும், எந்த ஒரு காரணத்திற்காகவும் கை விடப்படமாட்டாது , அது தொடர்ந்து கொண்டே செல்லும் என்பதை சர்வதேசமும், அயல் நாடான இந்தியாவும் புரிந்துகொள்ளவேண்டும்.

எமது போராட்டம் என்பது விழுந்துவிடவில்லை. வீழ்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. அது நிச்சயம் மீண்டும் எழும். புலம்பெயர் தேசங்களிலே சிலர் எமது போராட்டத்தை திசை திருப்பவும், எமக்குள் பிளவுகளை ஏற்படுத்தவும் செயற்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் எம்மக்கள் அந்த வஞ்சக வலைக்குள் வீழமாட்டார்கள் என்றே நம்புகிறேன்.

எத்தனையோ எதிர்ப்புகளுக்கும், இடர்களுக்கும் மத்தியில் பல சாதனைகளை புரிந்து, பல கட்டுமானங்களை வளர்த்து உலகின் முன் எழுந்துநின்ற எமது தேசியத்தலைவனின் பாதையில் தமிழர்கள் போராட்டம் தொடரும் என்றார்.

இந்த நிகழ்வில் சவுத்ஹோல் தமிழ் கல்விக்கூட மாணவிகளால் "எம் தலைவன் சாகவில்லை, என்றும் புலி தோற்பதில்லை" என்ற பாடலுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட நடனத்தின் போது அங்கிருந்த பெருந்தொகையான் மக்களின் கரவொலியால் மண்டபமே அதிர்ந்தது.

பிரித்தானிய ஐக்கிய தமிழர் செயற்பாட்டு குழுவால் மிகவும் சிறப்பாக ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டிருந்த இந்த நிகழ்வு மீண்டும் மக்கள் மனங்களில் ஒரு நம்பிக்கையை கொடுத்துள்ளதோடு, உணர்வுபூர்வமாகவும் இடம்பெற்றது.

More info: JKLF has again organised a protest against Indian brutalism in Kashmir. This time the protest will be held in front of British Prime Ministers Office 10 Downing Street London on Sunday 26th of September 2010, (1 pm).
Britain being one of the largest arms supplier to India, therefore we demand British Government to review its arms pact with India as these arms are being used against innocent civilians in Kashmir.
We request all freedom loving people in Britain to participate in this protest and raise their voice against brutality, occupation and in favour of Kashmiris National emancipation.

Sri Lanka pledges enhanced support for UN peacekeeping missions
President Mahinda Rajapaksa of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka23 September 2010 – Sri Lanka is ready to boost its participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations, President Mahinda Rajapaksa told the General Assembly today, also calling on the world
community to take urgent action to counter climate change and devote greater aid to Africa.At the same time he recalled his country’s defeat last year of Tamil separatist rebels – “one of the most brutal, highly organized, well funded and effective terrorist organizations” – and stressed that Sri Lanka’s healing must evolve from within since “imposed external solutions” breed resentment and ultimately fail.
“Leaders who have been chosen by their people often face difficult decisions,” he said. “They must be entitled to the goodwill and confidence of the international community with regard to the heavy burdens they are required to shoulder. The results of their decisions must be evaluated objectively and must be allowed to speak for themselves.
“That is not to say countries should operate in isolation. In this globally inter-dependent world, we must work together where we can and constructively counsel each other where appropriate. The United Nations forms the bedrock of this interaction and in this role it will always receive the support of Sri Lanka.”
Earlier this year Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed a panel of experts to advise him on accountability issues relating to alleged human rights violations during the final stages of the Sri Lanka conflict in accordance with a commitment on accountability made in a joint statement issued with Mr. Rajapaksa on a visit the island country in May 2009.
The conflict, which had raged on and off for nearly three decades and killed thousands of people, ended with large numbers of Sri Lankans living as internally displaced persons (IDPs), especially in the north of the country.
Today Mr. Rajapaksa said 90 per cent of the IDPs had returned to their original villages, now cleared of landmines, and had been provided with the essential infrastructure necessary to resume normal lives.
“Over the past year, much has been reported and much has been said regarding my country’s liberation from terrorism,” he declared. “However, far less has been said of the suffering we had to undergo and the true nature of the enemy we have overcome…
“The asymmetrical nature of conflicts initiated by non-State actors gives rise to serious problems which need to be considered in earnest by the international community.”
