Parents cry foul in Lankan maid's death in Saudi

The parents of a housemaid who died after allegedly falling from a two-story building in Makkah have complained of foul play to the Foreign Ministry in Colombo.

The maid, Habibullah Arifa, allegedly slipped through the window of a second-floor apartment in Makkah on April 11 and died on the spot, Sri Lanka Consulate in Jeddah, Consul General Sabaraullah Khan said Saturday.

The woman who came to the Kingdom on February 5 had told her father that she was being harassed all the time by the mistress of the house. The woman's father said in his letter to the Foreign Ministry when his daughter was speaking to him by phone, telling him of her ordeal, the mistress grabbed the phone and told him that she was not doing any work.

Based on the father's complaint, the diplomat said the mission had called for a full-scale investigation into the death.

"We are waiting for medical and forensic reports to clarify the matter," Khan said.

Saudi sponsor Hamdhan Mohammed Al-Harbi, said the maid died when she tried to escape through the window.

Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) Chairman Kingsley Ranawake told the Daily News that his establishment which coordinates Lankan overseas workers, is investigating into the issue of the woman's alleged forged passport.

"We have taken up the task with the employment agent, who was instrumental in the whole operation," he said, pointing out that if found guilty, he would face severe punishment.

The chairman also said that the Immigration Department was in the process of introducing finger prints in Sri Lankan passports to avoid such problems in the future.

*The volcanic eruption in Iceland that disrupted air travel in Europe on Thursday was not a particularly powerful one, experts said, but they cautioned that its effects — both on travel and on the regional climate — might linger.
*Severe disruption extended all the way to the Asia-Pacific, where major carriers like Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and Qantas, the Australian airline, were among those that canceled, delayed or diverted flights to and from Europe on Thursday and Friday.
*Aviation authorities said there was no prospect of a return to normal flights until Saturday at the earliest, raising questions about a wide range issues from the economy and business to family vacations and even to whether President Obama would be able to fly to the funeral on Sunday of the Polish president and his wife, killed in an unrelated air crash last week. A decisive mandate in Sri Lanka
The results of post-conflict Sri Lanka's first parliamentary elections are on expected lines. President Mahinda Rajapaksa's ruling United Progressive Freedom Alliance, led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, has scored a decisive victory on the strength of a vote share that may exceed 60 per cent. After President Rajapaksa's big victory in the January 26 presidential election, there was never really any doubt about the outcome of Thursday's general election. Perhaps this was one reason for the low turnout of voters. This is way and ahead the best performance by a political party or coalition in a general election since 1977. Indeed, a two-thirds majority in the 225-seat House, always a difficult target in a system of proportional representation, seems to be within the UPFA's grasp, assuming there will be a repeat of the defections that followed the 2004 elections. The United National Party, which has won only one parliamentary election in two decades, can take some comfort from the fact that its vote-base has not eroded significantly in this period. But the kingmaker of elections past, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, has suffered a rout, its opportunistic decision to back former Sri Lanka army commander, Sarath Fonseka, who is under detention and facing court martial proceedings, doing nothing to shore up its fortunes. The third force, the Democratic National Alliance, has failed to take off.

With his political stock enormously boosted, President Rajapaksa must turn his attention to the urgent task of reconciliation with Sri Lanka's Tamil minority and the development of the North and the East. The poor voter turnout in Jaffna was a reminder of Sri Lanka's persisting ethnic polarisation. In an interview to this newspaper after his re-election, President Rajapaksa agreed that the 13th Amendment was “implementable” in Northern Sri Lanka with some provisos. Under his leadership, the government must quickly articulate a set of comprehensive political reforms that will devolve power to the Tamils in a genuine and far-going way. It would be ideal if the UPFA, secure in its majority, could co-opt the UNP and especially its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in this historic project. It is one of the tragedies of the Tamil community that its leadership, even in a post-LTTE world, remains confused between the politically achievable and the impossible. Unable to shake off the extremist politics and expectations of vocal sections of the Tamil diaspora, the Tamil National Alliance, which has fared well in the Northern Province, has not shown itself to be capable of rising to the challenge. What Sri Lanka's Tamils badly need is a responsible democratic leadership that can engage meaningfully with the Sinhala majority to resolve all aspects of the Tamil question on the basis of equality and devolution of power within a united Sri Lanka.

New Delhi: Prime minister Manmohan Singh today congratulated Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa for his party's convincing win in the Parliamentary elections.

Singh spoke to Rajapaksa on phone and congratulated him for his party's convincing win in the elections, a PMO official said.

Rajapaksa's United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) returned to power bagging 117 of 225 seats in the first post-LTTE era parliamentary polls in Sri Lanka against a fractured opposition.

UFPA's closest rival United National Front secured just 46 seats while ex-army chief Sarath Fonseka's Democratic National Alliance failed to touch even a double digit mark.

அரசியலில் மக்கள் விடுதலை முன் னணி பொய் கூறியதில்லை. அமைச்சர் களாக பதவிகள் வகித்த காலத்தில் வரப்பிர சாதங்களைப் பெற்றுக் கொள்ளவில்லை. இந்த யுகத்தில் தேவைகளை நிறைவேற் றவே நாம் இணைந்து ஜனநாயகத்தைப் பாதுகாக்க வெற்றிக் கிண்ணச் சின்னத் தில் போட்டியிடுகிறோம். இன்று யுத்தத்தை காட்டியே அரசு வாக்குப்பிச்சை கேட்கி றது. யுத்தம் நிறைவடைந்து உள்ளது. ஜன நாயகமே இன்றைய தேவை.
பொன்சேகாவுக்கு கிடைக்கும் வாக் குகள் அனைத்தும் ஜனநாயகத்துக்குக் கிடைக்கும் வாக்குகள். நாம் நாடாளுமன் றம் சென்றாலும், செல்லாவிட்டாலும் ஜன நாயகத்தைப் போராட்டத்தின் மூலம் காப் பாற்றுவோம். அனைவருடனும் இணைந்து சகவாழ்வு அரசியலை முன்னெடுப்போம்.
ஊடகத்தை அடக்கிய ஜனாதிபதி தன் போலி தேர்தல் வெற்றியைக் கொண்டா டுகிறார். அடுத்த அரசை அவர்கள் அமைத் தால் ராஜபக்ஷ குடும்பமும், அரசியலில் சண்டியர்களுமே ஆட்சி புரிவர். குடும்ப ஆதிக்கத்திற்கு உதவுபவர்களுக்கு மட் டுமே ராஜபக்ஷ அரசில் அனைத்தும் கிடைக்கும்.

ஜெனரல் பொன்சேகாவே நாட்டு மக் கள் அனைவரையும் ஒன்றுபடுத்தியவர். அவருக்குக் கிடைத்த வாக்குகள் மூவின மக்களிடமிருந்தும் சமமாகக் கிடைத்தது. இதுவே மக்கள் சமமாக வாழக்கூடிய நிலை யாகும். ஏப்ரல் 8 ஆம் திகதிக்கு பின்னர் அனைவரும் இணைந்து சகவாழ்வு அர சொன்றை உருவாக்குவோம். ஜனாதி பதிப் பதவியேற்கவுள்ள நவம்பர் 19 ஆம் திகதிக்கு முன்னர் நாடாளுமன்றத்தில் சகவாழ்வு அரசொன்று உருவாக்குவோம்.

எதிர்வரும் 8 ஆம் திகதிக்குப் பின்னரே எமது போராட்டம் உச்ச நிலை பெறும். அதற்கு அனைத்து மக்களும் பூரண ஆதர வு நலக வேண்டும் என்றார்
