Land Day, reaffirmed Palestinian people eternal commitment to the homeland

Taher: Land Day marks the continuing struggle to free all of Palestine

Posted: 08 Apr 2012 11:31 AM PDT

Comrade Maher al-Taher, member of the Political Bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and leader of its branch in exile, said on April 2 that the Palestinian people, through their actions on Land Day, reaffirmed their eternal commitment to the homeland of Palestine, in Haifa, Yafa, Akka, Nazareth, Lid and every inch of the land of Palestine.

In an interview with the Voice of the People radio station, Dr. Taher said that “On this day, many martyrs have fallen, who sought to send their message to the world: that this land is the land of the Palestinian people, that the Zionist invaders will not be able to continue their occupation. Since that date in 1976, this day has been marked by the people of Palestine throughout ’48, in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Jerusalem, and the countries of refuge, exile and diaspora, emphasizing the goals of our people and our unity in every place, and the unity of the land of Palestine, in the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem, and the occupied lands of ’48.”

Comrade Taher stressed that Palestine cannot be fragmented, and saluted the Palestinian people on the land occupied in 1948, saying “You have remained on the land, asserted your eternal connection to the land and our dear and beloved homeland. We will continue the struggle and resistance to liberate every part of the land of Palestine.”

Taher said that Palestinian unity is critical, saying “enough is enough – enough of managing the division. It is time to make a radical and genuine move to restore the PLO and rebuild the Palestinian house. The continuation of this situation cannot be accepted by the Palestinian people in any way.” He emphasized the importance of struggle and resistance, saying that the so-called “peace process” is a proven failure in the presence of an enemy that seeks total domination of the land. It is clear, said Taher, that there is only one option in front of our people – to continue steadfastness and resistance.

He praised the solidarity activities on Land Day around the world, saying that these activities were not only taking place in the countries surrounding Palestine, but in all Palestinian communties around the world, in Europe and the Americas, saying that the Land Day actions were part of comprehensive popular and media movements and actions, and that this day had beome a major day of action in the Arab world, to assert the unity of Palestinian land, express solidarity, and stand by the Palestinian people as they continue their struggle for the liberation of their homeland, adding that the Arab capitals will see many activities on Land Day and moving forward for Palestine.

U.S. Deploys 2nd Aircraft Carrier to Gulf .

Associated Press
DUBAI—The U.S. Navy said Monday it has deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf
region amid rising tensions with Iran over its nuclear program.

The deployment of the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise along with the Abraham Lincoln carrier
strike group marks only the fourth time in the past decade that the Navy has had two aircraft
carriers operating at the same time in the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea, said Cmdr. Amy
Derrick-Frost of the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet.

The two carriers will support the American military operations in Afghanistan and antipiracy efforts off Somalia's coast and in the Gulf of Aden, Cmdr. Derrick-Frost said.
The warships also patrol the Gulf's strategic oil routes that Iran has threatened to shut down
in retaliation for economic sanctions.

The deployment of the second aircraft carrier is "routine and not specific to any threat," Cmdr.
Derrick-Frost added. She didn't say how long the Navy will keep the increased military presence
in region.

It was in June 2010 that the U.S. last had two carriers operating in the region. Before then,
the carriers were deployed in March 2003 during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and in February
2007 in support of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Enterprise is based in Norfolk, Va. It is the Navy's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier
that is now on its last mission.

The Enterprise was commissioned in November 1961. The carrier is scheduled to be deactivated
this fall.

UNHRC resolution is merely a note of caution made by concerned friends- Mangala

The silver lining on the dark Geneva cloud .
Daily Mirror Friday, 23 March 2012 00:32

UNHRC resolution is merely a note of caution made by concerned friends who are genuinely worried about the self-destructive direction Sri Lanka is taking.

The resolution in Geneva must be understood in the spirit in which it was presented. The key sponsors of the resolution are all long standing friends of our country and many of them in addition to being important economic and trading partners, helped Sri Lanka in its fight against terrorism. The US, not only proscribed the LTTE, but also played a key role in curbing their fund raising while a special 'Contact group' was formed to monitor and curtail arms procurement in SE Asia. The UK and the EU also dealt a severe blow to the LTTE by proscribing it and coming down heavily on their fund raising activities while continuing to provide Sri Lankan exports with an important market. India, who voted with the resolution, has been a great friend throughout and as Kadirgamar once said our friendship has reached a state of 'irreversible excellence'. Rather than hurl vitriolic abuse at them, the government, even at this stage must realize that the UNHRC resolution is merely a note of caution made by concerned friends who are genuinely worried about the self-destructive direction Sri Lanka is taking.

Perhaps, this is an appropriate moment for introspection and some soul searching by the Rajapaksa regime. Even now, it Is not too late for the Government to admit that it is the short sighted policies and its anti democratic tendencies which paved the way for this resolution and its resounding victory at the UNHRC.

However, it is still not too late to turn a new page and start afresh in a new direction.

The Rajapaksa regime is now at the cross- roads. By continuing on the same old path, they can turn Sri Lanka into the 'new Burma' of Asia - a rogue regime shunned and sidelined or they can choose a new direction which will transform Sri Lanka into a vibrant  multi ethnic, multi-cultural democracy which can deliver the bright and prosperous future our people surely deserve.

Dhammashoka or Mugabe?  The choice is yours, Mr. President.

ஈரானிடமிருந்து எவரும் எண்ணெய் வாங்கக் கூடாது: பேட்டை ரவுடி ஒபாமா உத்தரவு

"Today, we put on notice all nations that continue to import petroleum or petroleum products from Iran that they have three months to significantly reduce those purchases or risk the imposition of severe sanctions on their financial institutions," Menendez said in a statement.

Obama signs off new Iran oil sanctions
US president imposes measures to further isolate Iranian central bank, judging move will not hit US consumers or allies.

Last Modified: 31 March
US President Barack Obama is moving ahead with new sanctions aimed at squeezing Iran's oil exports after determining there is enough crude on world markets to take the step without
harming Washington's allies.

Obama's move, announced on Friday, allows the US to go forward with sanctions on foreign banks that continue to purchase oil from Iran. The measures aim to further isolate Iran's central bank, which processes nearly all of the country's oil purchases, from the global economy.

US officials hope ratcheting up economic pressure will both push Iran to abandon its controversial nuclear programme and convince Israel to give sanctions time to take hold before pursuing a threatened military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

The US and allies believe that Iran is attempting to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran says its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

Spare oil capacity

Under a sweeping defence bill Obama signed at the end of December, the president had until Friday to determine if there was enough oil supply on the world market to allow countries to cut their oil purchases from Iran.
The president said he based his determination on global economic conditions, the level of spare oil capacity and increased production by some countries, among other factors.
He said he would keep monitoring the global market closely to ensure it could handle a reduction of oil purchases from Iran. With oil prices already rising this year amid rising tensions between Iran and the West, US officials have sought assurances that pushing countries to stop buying from Iran would not cause a further spike in prices.
That is particularly important for Obama in an election year that has seen an increasing focus on gas prices. The congressionally mandated sanctions target foreign financial institutions that do business with Iran's central bank, barring them from operating in the US to buy or sell Iranian oil.
US allies
The penalties are to take effect at the end of June, around the same time a European Union embargo on Iranian oil kicks in.In order to provide flexibility to countries friendly to the US, the sanctions bill allows Washington to grant waivers to nations that significantly reduce their purchases of Iranian oil.
Domestic and foreign policy concerns have complicated the administration's decision to pursue the oil sanctions. Many of the countries that buy oil from Iran are US allies, including several European Union nations, Japan, South Korea and India.
Even before Friday's decision, the state department announced that it would grant waivers to 10 EU countries and Japan because of steps they had already taken to cut back on Iranian oil.
The EU oil embargo, approved in January, is set to take effect in July.
'Nations on notice'
Senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat who co-authored the sanctions legislation with Republican Senator Mark Kirk, said he welcomed Obama's support in targeting Iran's central bank.

"Today, we put on notice all nations that continue to import petroleum or petroleum products from Iran that they have three months to significantly reduce those purchases or risk the imposition of severe sanctions on their financial institutions," Menendez said in a statement.

He predicted most countries would cut their purchase of oil from Iran, either out of fear of sanctions, or a shared fear over Iran's alleged pursuit of nuclear weaponry.

The US has not said what constitutes a significant reduction in Iranian oil purchases, and analysts believe the administration could use different metrics for different countries.

Secretary Clinton Says Syrian President Assad 'Must Go'

By REENA NINAN and MARISA TAYLOR
April 1, 2012
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said that, despite a newly-brokered cease fire agreement with Syrian President Bashar al Assad, his days as president are numbered as his forces continue the bloody clash with Syrian opposition groups.

"We think Assad must go," Clinton told ABC today after attending the one-day Friends of the Syrian People conference in Istanbul. "The sooner the better for everyone concerned."

But she added that the process must be multi-pronged.
The UN-Arab League peace plan and cease fire negotiated last week by envoy Kofi Annan is a good beginning, she said, but Assad has yet to stop the violence.

"There has to be a timeline," Clinton said regarding the diplomatic process. "It can't go on indefinitely."

Representatives of more than 60 countries attending the conference pledged financial assistance to the Syrian Free Army, the main opposition group, in an effort to encourage further defections from Assad's forces.

Clinton said the United States has agreed to pledge an additional $12 million for a total of $25 million in aid and to provide communications equipment to help the Syrian Free Army organize.

She met with the Syrian National Congress today to discuss how to document evidence of the atrocities for future investigations or trials in international criminal courts. A sanctions working group was also created to target those who are helping Assad.

While some Arab countries have urged western nations to arm Syrian rebels, Clinton said the United States is trying to balance its support of opposition groups without raising expectations that can't be met.

"We do have a stake in what happens in Syria, we just have to be thoughtful about how we pursue our role," she told ABC.

And in response to reports of the growing reach of al Qaeda in Syria, Clinton said: "The vast majority of the people who are standing up against the horrific assaults of the military machine in Syria are ordinary citizens defending themselves and their homes."

"We want to send a very clear message to the people inside Syria ... that the international community stands with you and we want to see an inclusive democratic Syria where members of every ethnic group, every religion are given a chance to be full citizens," she said.

Dr Fai இன் சிறைத்தண்டனைக்கு அனைத்துக் காஸ்மீர் கட்சிகள் கண்டனம்

Separatists aghast over US court verdict against Dr Fai

“Dr Fai is a proud son of the soil who has been championing legitimate cause of Kashmiris’ at international level for more than 25 years. For us he (Dr Fai) is a great patriot, who served Kashmiris’ cause for Right to Self Determination diligently and selflessly over the years on diplomatic front”,
Saghar said.

Islamabad/Srinagar NISAR AHMED THOKAR/GKNN  Mar 31: Expressing dissatisfaction over the US court’s verdict against veteran Kashmiri scholar Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, Kashmiris on this side of the Line of Control on Saturday said the judgment had come as a shock to Kashmiris.
The convener of Hurriyat Conference (M) Pakistan and AJK chapter Mehmood Ahmed Saghar while talking to Greater Kashmir said, “Dr Fai is a proud son of the soil who has been championing legitimate cause of Kashmiris’ at international level for more than 25 years. For us he (Dr Fai) is a great patriot, who served Kashmiris’ cause for Right to Self Determination diligently and selflessly over the years on diplomatic front”, Saghar said.

“Dr Fai’s years-long struggle on diplomatic front stands witness to the fact that he worked within the parameters and in accordance with the US policy regarding Kashmir,” he added.

Referring to the UN resolution on Kashmir Saghar said the United States was the co-sponsor of the historic resolution that gave legitimacy to Kashmir issue. He stated that it was under the direction of President Harry Truman, the then president of the United States that the US ambassador to the
UN, Ambassador Huston wrote the resolution guaranteeing right to self-determination to Kashmiri people.

Saghar said that Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir was based on the relevant UN resolutions on Kashmir and “It does not mean that any person promoting and pleading right to self-determination
for Kashmiris  is working on Pakistan’s agenda.” “Such an argument” he said lacks credibility and is devoid of any meaning and substance.

He also expressed his sympathy with Dr Fai and his family and said the whole Kashmiri nation stands with them.

Chairman of Jammu Kashmir Peoples Freedom League, Muhammad Farooq Rehmani said, “An American court’s judgment to sentence Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai to 2 years imprisonment has surprised and shocked the people of Kashmir across region for he was advocating the cause of the basic human rights and the right of self-determination as envisaged in the UN charter and relevant security council resolutions for the last several decades in US”.

The latest harsh court judgment he said won’t really send a good message to Kashmiris and all those people who expected and also demanded American facilitation in the sub-continent on the
dispute of Kashmir.

He was of the view that the US should ponder one thousand times before giving up its helpful role in resolving the Kashmir issue and should not hurt the sentiments of Kashmiris.

Ghulam Muhammad Safi, the convener of Hurriyat (G) while terming the court verdict as politically motivated said that the judgement amply demonstrates the United State’s double standard vis-à-vis Kashmir and Pakistan.

Move to appease India: Salahuddin

Chairman of the United Jihad Council (UJC) and supreme commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Syed Sallahuddin while condemning the court verdict termed it as a contemptible attempt to appease India. He said that the decision was reflective of the America’s dichotomy and its policy of
indifference towards Kashmir issue.

He said Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, became a scapegoat of confrontation between the intelligence institutions of Pakistan and American.

“Where they (US intelligence agencies) not aware of Dr. Fai’s activities prior to Abbotabad incident”, he asked saying that the KAC chief had been working on Kashmir cause for past three
decades in the US. He maintained that the verdict was tantamount to adding insult to the injuries of Kashmiris.

Unfortunate: Geelani
Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani has expressed serious concern over the awarding of two-year imprisonment sentence Dr Fai by a US Court, terming it unfortunate. “New Delhi’s lobbying in America got him trapped in its net. This is an attempt to malign the ongoing movement in Kashmir,” Geelanisaid in a statement.

He described  him ( Dr Fai) as Kashmiris’ ambassador. “Dr Fai has been actively highlighting the Kashmiris’ peaceful struggle for in the world at diplomatic levels for the past several years,” he added.

Mirwaiz unhappy
Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq termed the verdict against Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai as unfortunate and expressed dismay over it. “Dr Fai has been representing Kashmiris for past three decades. He has played a pro-active role to highlight Kashmir movement. People of Kashmir salute him for him remaining steadfast on his resolve,” Mirwaiz told Greater Kashmir.

Shabir Shah disappointed
Terming imprisonment sentence to Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai as unfortunate and disappointing, chairman of Democratic Freedom Party Shabir Ahmad Shah Saturday said such punishments in a democratic country like USA were not only disappointing but undemocratic.

In a statement, Shah said, “Lobbying is not illegal according to USA law and punishing a separatist who was working for the Kashmir cause cannot be justified.”

He vowed that Kashmiris would not be deterred by such acts and the movement would be carried forward at any cost.

Verdict unfortunate: DLP  The chairman of Democratic Liberation Party Hashim Qureshi has expressed serious concern over the awarding of two-year imprisonment sentence to Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai by a US Court.

Hashim Qureshi described Dr Fai as gentle and kind person who has been highlighting Kashmiri’s peaceful struggle at diplomatic levels in the world.

Javid Mir expresses concern  Chairman of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (H) Javid Ahmad Mir expressed serious concern over US Court sentencing Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai to two- year imprisonment. “Dr Fai has been representing the Kashmiris’ cause in various foreign countries.

He was representing the peaceful and violence-free struggle of Kashmiris in these countries.,” he said.
