Maithripala-Sirisena Common opposition Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena says he has no intention of withdrawing the army from the north if he wins the Presidential election.
Speaking at a special press conference today, Sirisena said that if he wins Thursday’s election, as President, National security will be his responsibility.
He said that he will give National security priority and not allow the country to be divided or allow the LTTE to regroup in Sri Lanka.
“We have not signed any agreement with the Tamil National Alliance or Sri Lanka Muslim Congress to devolve powers or divide the country,” he added.
He said that the political parties which are are supporting him at the election have reached an agreement based on the 100 day election manifesto and nothing else.
The Tamil National Alliance has been pushing for the withdrawal of the army from the North and the Government had alleged that Sirisena may have agreed to withdraw the army from the North in order to win the support of the main Tamil party.
Meanwhile, Sirisena said that he will look to strengthen Sri Lanka’s foreign police and win the hearts of all countries in order to maintain a good relationship with them.
He also said that while giving Buddhism priority, the joint opposition will ensure other religions are also respected and given due recognition. (Colombo Gazette)
