Sri Lankan Government Has Enough Votes for Constitutional Reform
Colombo : Sri Lanka Aug 29, 2010 By Anuradha K. Herath
Sri Lanka's President Rajapaksa smiles during his ceremonial reception at the presidential palace in New Delhi The Sri Lankan government of President Mahinda RajapaksaMahinda Rajapaksa has secured enough votes to pass constitutional amendments that would allow him to run for a third term in office. State-run Sunday Observer newspaper reported that the government has obtained the support of 153 parliamentarians, more than the two-thirds majority needed to change the Constitution.
On Friday, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) announced its eight parliamentary members would be supporting the government in the proposed changes to the Constitution.
"The high command of the Muslim Congress had decided to vote in support of the constitutional amendments,” said SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem.
Those changes include lifting the term-restriction on a presidential candidate. The current Constitution of 1978 allows for a maximum of two presidential terms. The proposed amendments would remove that condition. If passed in Parliament, the new regulations would allow Rajapaksa to run for a third term.
The SLMC said that although it will support the amendments, it will not join the government. Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) has criticized the SLMC decision, pointing out that during the April general election, the SLMC campaigned under the United National Front, led by the UNP.
UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told media that the SLMC should have consulted the UNP leaders prior to giving its support to the government.
